N.C. sex toy company gets business of year award

HILLSBOROUGH (AP) — A sex toy and video mail order business, once picketed by ministers and searched by postal investigators, has been named business of the year in Orange County.

PHE Inc., the parent company of Adam & Eve, is a top citizen and a major taxpayer, said Margaret Cannell, executive director of the Hillsborough-Orange County Chamber of Commerce. The family has also helped with the local animal shelter and a family violence prevention center.

"We didn't have any problem giving them the award," said chamber president Robbin Taylor-Hall. "We don't look at some of the items they sell."

The company's product line includes videos and flavored sugar-free lubricants. Products are available only by mail.

I lived in Carrboro for four years (1983 to 1987) and drove by the bldg. on Hwy. 54 many, many times. Very nondescript---no skanky neon signs or strippers hanging around the front or anything! LOL

5. Actually, they now have a few stores, and I've been...

...a customer of theirs since 1981. :) They started as a family-planning mail order company and helped with family planning in third-world countries (and still do). I went to college just down the road from their original mail-order warehouse. They don't bother anyone and they do business very discreetly and quietly. I remember the "sex police" crackdown that happened in the mid-1980s, and it was absolutely ridiculous. The business was raided without probable cause (they weren't doing anything illegal then or now) and employees were detained and deprived of their Miranda rights. If I remember correctly, they sued and won.

Their stores are clean and tasteful, and their business is beyond reproach (although the fundies have always wanted them out).

This would work on the same priciple that the tee-totlers banned alcohol in the US: If the majority remains silent, the fundies will be able to get away with everything.

Yes, it's EXACTLY like Prohibition. Consumption of alcohol is not going to stop just because some people want it to, and neither would sex. Prohibition did not last because it was against human nature.
