Q: Conservative reply to Cheney's oil maps
One conservative gave me this reply:

---------------------------

1. When considering a comprehensive oil project it would be necessary to account for all sources of oil on the market, even those that the US does not have direct access.

2. Even without the war the oil fields in Iraq could have become open to the world market via French and Russian companies that had agreements with the Hussein government to develop the fields in the case that the sanctions were loosened or dropped.

-----------------

"earmarked for production sharing" supposedly refers to the Russian and French contracts, blah blah blah

What would be an effective reply to this?

1. cheney was pushing for an end to sanctions before 9/11
he was pushing to rollback some of the sanctions against iraq...so ask why is it that cheney would want to do business with such an evil person, and why would he want to re-open the gates for saddam to reap the benefits of the oil trade, thus giving saddam more money to pursue a WMD program and to torture his own people.

see what they say to that little bit.

3. He's quite correct on the facts.
The question is why the secrecy.

5. There Is An Unspoken Link Here
The secrecy is the most worrying part of this to me and the absence of maps and projections for other major producers like Russia, Nigeria, Angola, and Venezuela for example. It strikes me as odd that if you are trying to get a grasp of global production for a national energy policy that you would only include projections for three Gulf states.

There is one interesting unspoken in the countries listed here besides their geographic proximity: At the time of this meeting, all three of these countries' oil and gas resources were wholly owned by the governments of those countries (UAE-Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Saudi Arabia-Saudi Aramco, Saddam Iraq-Oil Ministry).

Maybe we're looking at the most audacious privatization scheme yet?

8. Yep. WHY the COVERUP?
One must assume after over 2 years that what they wanted hidden REMAINS hidden.

Pay no attention to anything they release for public consumption today, tomorrow, or next week. What we want is what they STILL have hidden.

10. "the most audacious privatization scheme yet"
I can think of no more accurate way to describe so-called Operation Iraqi Freedom

turning an entire country into a Ken Lay/deregulator's paradise

4. Bingo!
"Even without the war the oil fields in Iraq could have become open to the world market via French and Russian companies that had agreements with the Hussein government to develop the fields in the case that the sanctions were loosened or dropped."

Tell him he just hit upon one of the REAL reasons for going to war.

Although the scenario he cites was a possibility, it is almost certain that the oil industry would still have remained nationalized. Privatization and putting U.S. companied first in line were war motives.

6. Bada Boom, Bada Bingo Indeed ! This is the Causus Belli
Forgive my Latin - it has been 40 years or so since I cracked a text.

But in plain English, these maps and notations reveal the true cause for war in Iraq: for oil and power. WMDs and all the rest are calculated and blatant lies.

That is not the American way of truth and justice. It is gross, greedy, murderous -- and in the long-run leading the US and the world to ruin. We must switch from an oil-based economy to a one fueled by sustainable means.

The Bush cabal is ensuring that our national destiny is tied to stolen oil, paid for by the blood of our soldiers. You can bet your untroubled little bippy that the terrorists of the world see our invasion of Iraq for oil as yet one more glaring Causus Belli to strike at the US.

"Bring 'em on" ? I don't think so Mr. Bush. Please stop inviting terrorists to shoot at our men and women in uniform. Instead, "Bring 'em home."
