"don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good ." GOP spin on drug bill.
I saw this here:
http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/1126/p01s01-uspo.html
SNIP..."Democrats are gambling that this is a law that seniors ultimately won't like, and that they'll take it out on the supporters of it. But in gambling on that, they're also running the risk that seniors will say, 'Look, we shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good - and this is a good bill...."

I heard it on a panel on CNBCW just now. Exact words, even with the "Look..." said in that patient, condescending tone.

This talking point is just as bad "not perfect but better than nothing."

The right wing is so obvious in their talking points.

2. (Sometimes perfect is the enemy of the good)
But not in this case!

But I would challenge ANY GOP'er to the following:

If EXACTLY the same bill had been offered under a DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT would you have voted EXACTLY the same way?

I think the honest answer would be a resounding No. This was a "$400 Bliion Dollar Re-Elect Bush Campaign"

3. comment
The Repubs did an excellent job of painting us into a corner. They took one of our issues, packaged it so the AARP bought it, called it an improvement in Medicare, and then dared us to vote against it. If we vote for it, they get to claim victory, and if we vote against it, they can claim we were against improving Medicare. It's been said time and time again, but they're stealing our issues and making them their own. Everytime they do it, they can claim they are taking the lead in helping Americans, and it's one less issue we can effectively raise during the election cycle.

People hear and will remember things in sound bites, and so far the Repubs have "we increased the education budget by 11%", "we improved Medicare for seniors", and "we've inacted laws to protect us from terrorist and we're taking the fight to them before they get us." And there's probably some others I'm not coming up with at the moment. That these items aren't being funded or are leading down the road of privitization or won't lead to peace seem to be falling on deaf ears.

I'm not giving up the fight, but it's looking terribly uphill.

This is how I see it. Not trying to throw a damper on things, just trying to be real.

4. Trust me, it is real.
When you control the media, when they do your spin for you, you have already won.....unless people keep fighting.

Most would rather bash candidates than spread the word.

5. It's a game called politics
Which is a little understood or appreciated concept amongst the masses. Even here in DU, a place where I think most are very political and strive towards political astuteness as well as ends, I think the concept is very underappreciated and misunderstood. It's easy in here to type "the bastards have sold us out". It's much harder to explain all that goes on within the building and opposition to these bills and ideas. Even the concept of the pukes controlling the House, the Senate and the White House is ignored by many that post on liberal political sites. The same would be true within conservative sites if the shoe were on the other foot. Politics is mostly undercover and strategic. The average Joe just doesn't get it and it isn't going to change anytime soon. This doesn't excuse anything but I would suggest that everyone and especially the loudest of the howlers get some actual elected time and experience in their lives. That will be our salvation. GET INVOLVED!!!!!

6. You've already allowed them to win the spin by stating it's not perfect.
What you should have countered was: We were not expecting perfect, but inadequate is not acceptable either.

7. My brother lost two fingers in Viet Nam
The Doctor in the states looked at the x-rays and read the report. He told my brother that he had received "inadequate care" in Viet Nam and that he could have saved at least one of the fingers if not both of them. My brother replied, "I could also have lost my whole hand if not my life, Doc, what are you trying to say to me?" Doc just said it was a shame. Brother is thankful he's still with us.
