Senator Zell Miller said in a speech for his book
Senator Zell Miller this in a speech for his book, "A National Party No More," recorded earlier this month and just broadcast on C-Span 2:

George McGovern ran on peace-at-any-cost and only won one state.

Walter Mondale ran on raising-taxes and only won one state.

This year's Democrats are running on those 2 losing platforms.
-------------------------
Regardless of what you think of Zell Mlller, what do you think of that argument?

1. McGovern didn't run on peace-at-any-cost . . .
. . . he was a WWII vet. for goodness sake. He ran on an anti-Vietnam War platform, and got defeated because Nixon announced that he would end the war soon, and subverted his base issue.

Reagan added about $4 trillion dollars to the national debt, and the budget didn't get ballanced until the end of the Clinton administration, a decade later.

Dukakis once said something like, I said I would raise taxes, I told the truth, and lost. Bush said he wouldn't raise taxes, he lied, and won.

It is hard to conceed that either being fiscally irresponsible or untruthful is advisable for a political candidate.

2. Mondale Was The One Who Had The Balls To Admit It
While Reagan, who apparently was NOT supposed to raise taxes, did indeed raised those taxes in tax hikes higher than Clinton's after he won that race.

And the 1972 election brought in the famous Democratic opposition that led to Nixon's downfall

3. If you toss out the Mondale and Dukakis references, Joe Lieberman
Edited on Thu Nov-27-03 10:42 PM by oasis
said almost the same thing in his "official" speech which signaled his candidacy for president. Check his website.

"Sellouts" such as Zell Q. and Joe only perpetuate the perception which was created over the years by the right wing. Throw in, "god hating liberals" and you have the "trifecta of falsehoods."

Do social programs cost more than no social progams? Yes. Medicare and Social Security are programs which were started by Democrats.
