DEATH! Doom, and Destruction for the Democratic Party
I'm an optimist. And I'm getting a bit nauseated by the constant doom and gloom threads in GD.

What the hell are you talking about? I'm not a politico, I'll admit--but what is this attitude of constant victimhood and destruction?

Why do I see threads on a regular basis that look like none other than Eeyore threads?

President Dean is coming to town! Are many of you guys that backwards? Do you not see what's going on?

I realize that the last couple of years have been the most awful in my practical and political lifetime, and I realize that I'm 46 years old...but please realize that the honeysuckle still smells sweet, that there is a God, that you have your own dreams and abilities, and that the DOG still hunts. The grass is still underfoot. It might be a little dry and prickly, but it's still there. The hound still howls and the sewer/shithouse still stinks. Consider the shithouse, but look at the stars.

1. Dissing the troops isn't helping
What is all this "Internationizing the War" crap. Our men and women are now chopped liver? I just don't see how campaigning that without the French and Russians that our military isn't legitimate is going to win anyone over.

It's one thing to argue that we shouldn't be proactive but yet another that our military isn't legitimate.

3. What in the world are you talking about?
Your post makes no sense whatsoever. If it's supposed to reflect Dean's position it's hilariously distorted.

6. Not just Dean
Actually more Hillary but Dean too. Can we give the troops some credit? Kofi isn't about to get involved so what International troops are these people talking about? Is there some UN army I don't know about?

7. No one is blaming the troops for being rotten police
...that's not what they do. Clearly this mess is the president's fault.

But what Iraqis need as soon as possible is a strong peacekeeping/police force that is not a natural target of the resistence or Al Queda.

The well-being and future of the Iraqi public is far more important than the US military losing face in a job they should be in.

12. Even Saudi...
Even the Saudis are a target of Al Qaeda, because their sharia law is not strict enough. Getting more players in, or removing the US from the coalition force won't change the attitude of Al Qaeda. They're pretty unlimited in their war aims where Iraq or Adghanistan is concerned.

We won't lose face...we're kicking ass pretty well. Regardless of "why" we went to Iraq, we've learned the counter-insurgency lessons of Vietnam...

16. Quaeda vs. U.S. makes them popular
...esp. against an illegal invader.

Queda vs. The World would isolate them and tarnish their appeal to potential recruits.

26. BWAHAHAHHA!
"Regardless of "why" we went to Iraq, we've learned the counter-insurgency lessons of Vietnam..."

which explains why its Vietnam all over again, right? Which is why Gore called it a quagmire, yes?

4. Nobody's dissing the troops for God sakes
I wish some of you would get the hell away from that urban fairytale.

The beef has always been, and will always be, about the flawed and criminal war policies of the Chimp brigrade. Are you afraid the public doesn't understand the difference?

EDUCATE THEM. Don't grumble and walk away.

8. How is turning the reins over to the UN "Dissing troops"?????
I dont get it- internationalizing the forces means LESS Americans have to die.

That's what we thought we were getting when Bush/media told us we had a "Coalition of the Willing"- you know, other countries to share the economic brunt and lives that the war would cost us...

...it's too bad thats not how it turned out- that American families are taking most of the hits in this war-

Your post smacks of the typical- "If you disagree with Bush, then you hate the troops" LIE that Bush/media keeps telling...

I would much rather have a DEM like Clark, Edwards or Dean in office- a man that other countries could trust not to lie to them like Bush did. THEN mabey we could get some help in cleaning up this mess- other countries should have to share the costs, It's not "Dissing the troops" to discuss this.

11. Well, we don't need them
Any international forces (except the British) are a hindrance rather than a help, usually. There are some guys with a looser ROE in the bad-ass category (like the Brits, Aussies, whoever) that we may find use for in niche roles, but we don't like getting stuck with, say, a Saudi Arabian division guarding our flanks. We usually end up guarding our own flanks after they turn tail.

What they really mean by "internationalizing" is just getting broad support. We're more capable than pretty much everyone else put together nowadays, Dean just wants more cooperation with the UN/whoever.

27. "Our men and women are now chopped liver? "
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 04:22 AM by crunchyfrog
Unfortunately, many of them are now, and many more probably will be in the future. It's not that our military is illegitimate, and no one is saying that it is. However, the Iraqi people percieve our military occupation of their country as illegitimate, and that is why they are going to continue shooting at our men and women. The only way that a foreign presence is possibly going to be seen as legitimate by the Iraqi people is if it becomes truly internationalized.

That said, I don't see how what you've written bears any relationship whatsoever to what Janx wrote. What on Earth did she say that could possibly be construed as "dissing the troops"?

21. You read too many pundits
If you think after all this wailing and gnashing of teeth, Dean is pandering to the far left.

Maybe you found an article with the title torn off.
Or maybe you're privy to Karl Roves memos.

10. Just a reflection of Media Whore Hype
All media today are practically predicting the death of our party.

Have to admit the endless chorus has got me down a bit today.

I'll try to come back more positive tomorrow.

And nobody told me.

So far, I count one reply that has any remotely tangential relationship to the original post.

BTW, Janx: Nice post.

18. Thanks DB.
Every other day I find somebody crying in his/her beer about the state of the Democratic party. In reality this infighting is indicative of just how determined Dems are to oust Chimpy. Our only disagreement, really, is the way in which to do so.

I posted it, then the first response didn't seem to have much at all to do with anything. I thought people had overlooked the thread altogether...and then I saw it crop up this afternoon.
