The last music artist who REALLY annoyed you
I just listened to Ben Jelen's Give It All Away on the full album listening party, and was not impressed in the least. People call him the male Michelle Branch, but I don't see it. There's muddled (and sometimes bland) production and overwrought singing - and the lyrics didn't strike me either.

For the record, before him it was William Hung.

Remember, to each his or her own on all of this. :hi:

He opened for my favorite band (Asylum Street Spankers) last summer. We'd brought friends and family with us to see the Spankers, and the opening act was so bad we spent almost his entire set explaining that this was NOT the performer they had come to see. Avoid him at all costs.

15. Toby Keith
his lyrics about the "boot up your ass courtesy of the red, white and blue" sent kids who believed that jingoistic crap to die. He let kids believe they were "defending America" or avenging 9/11 by going to Iraq to kill "terra-ists". I know it's just a stupid song, but to me a personal symbol of how brain dead we (supposed adults) were sending these kids off to fight and die without questioning anything. It may be illogical, but that slimeball has lots of blood on his hands.

She can sing better, but too often doesn't use her vocals right. And her vocals are the only thing going for her, IMO. Plus, she doesn't seem like a very nice person to me - it's the way she attacks other artists.

My sister did her Masters at Miami of Ohio and I dated a guy from Cinci in college. I don't have any complaints against the Reds.

Now Atlanta is another matter. And our team is crappy mainly since we have no $. But we do have a gorgeous ball park. In the early 90s (the Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla days), though, that was another story. Don't really know much about the Brewers except the sympathy of one post-industrial town for another.

And what is especially annoying in that a young generation of female singers are growing up imitating her sound. O joy!

36. I liked the Smiths. I HATE solo Moz.
The interplay of Morrissey's "I wear black on the outside because I feel black on the inside" nonsense and Johnny Marr's brilliant guitar work and pop-compositional skills was fantastic.

Plus, Morrissey had a sense of humor back then. "There Is a Light that Never Goes Out" was not to be taken seriously. Sadly, much of his solo work IS to be taken seriously, which is frankly impossible. ;)

64. Were you and he lovers, and would you say so if you were?
On a forecourt, on a Friday, passing my way -- oooooooooooohhhhhh!

The last night on Maudlin Street -- good-bye house, good-bye stairs.

The kind people have a wonderful dream: Margaret on the guillotine! (actually, that IS a wonderful dream -- Shitty song, though)

69. Remind me again why we're doing this with lyrics by a guy we don't like?

We hate it when our friends become successful
We hate it when our friends become successful
Oh, look at those clothes
Now look at that face, it's so old
And such a video !
Well, it's really laughable
Ha, ha, ha ...

Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 01:07 PM by mvd
Good country is simple, but not too repetitive music IMO - and doesn't have trite lyrics IMO. A good country writer puts a new twist on important human subjects - or writes simply without too many cliches - to powerful effect.

108. Not really
Some of the new, poppy stuff closes a bridge between dance and pop. It all depends on the artist. And there are fine neotraditionalists. Again, I will say to each their own. There's not much one can say when there's a disagreement about how enjoyable music is.

109. I had surgery three years ago
And it was a really enlightening experience. It was pretty cutting-edge and I talked to these people everyday, because they wanted to know how I was doing, before and after. They became like family. Better, since they were nice to me and I know that they really cared. They asked me what kind of music I wanted them to play in the OR! I said anything but country. Most of them expressed visible relief. They put me under to the sounds of Stevie Nicks' "Rhiannon," an inspired choice, on their part, I thought. BTW, my surgery went extremely well.:-)

104. Sorry Skittles
I really like No Doubt and Gwen. The idea of a singer who is an active and proud member of a BAND is something that i give automatic bonus points for. I really like their style, she has stylistic range (she can belt and whisper), and they're tight live.

She's not a bimbo! So, stop saying that!

Seriously, i can understand why you don't like that version. But, you were calling my girl Gwen names, and we can't have that, now can we?

89. Ryan Adams
Frickin' musical doppleganger who doesn't have an original musical thought in his head but somehow became a critics darling.

Also needs to learn that just because you can write enough material to release three albums a year doesn't mean you should do it.

I don't know, perhaps Wiskeytown was something worth getting excited about but the guy solo...ehh.

I'm convinced that had it not been due to New York, New York coming out right around 9/11 and the fact that the video was filmed like two days before 9/11 that he'd never have become as moderately successful as he has become.

I saw him open up for Hanson last month! He is SO GOOD. The album does NOT do him justice in the least.

BTW, it was Clay Aiken and he still pisses me off to no end.
