A man called 'Ugly' Boot Camp 1951.
He was a small man/boy from a country place in the wilds of our country. At mess hall he ate small quantities of food, explaining in his hillbilly Patois "He was not accustomed to having great amounts of food to eat and that he did not wish to become addicted to eating as some day he must return to the poverty that was his life."

He was terrible ugly, there is no other way to describe him. His face was distorted, twisted, out of balance, a very sad individual. I ran into him years later somewhere or other. I hollered out to him "Hey Ugly!" embarrassed because I did not know his name.

He grinned from ear to ear glad to see an old friend. His face brightened, somehow he was not ugly anymore.
