DUers... My grandfather passed away this afternoon.

I have very sad news.

At approximately 1:50 PM today, my beloved paternal grandpa died. He was 81.

Last night he suffered a massive heart attack. They took him to the emergency room at around 7:00 PM. He also had pneumonia, and his kidneys failed. I last saw him at about 1:34 PM, as did my brother. (We left because we couldn’t bear it anymore.) My grandma (whom we call ‘Nannu’) and my dad were by his side at the hospital when he passed away. His other son, his daughter, and his four other grandchildren live in Suburban Detroit and were on their way to the hospital. We had hoped that he would make it until at least they came, but don’t think they’re even there yet.

‘Poppa’ was born on March 10, 1923. He had four brothers, all of whom had died, including one who died serving his beloved country in Korea. As for himself, Poppa worked for Ford Motor Company for 45 years. Yes, 45 years! His work there, however, was interrupted when he answered Uncle Sam’s call to serve in the US Army in the Asia-Pacific theater during World War II. He and his now-widow, Nannu (who was an Army Nurse in the war; I think that’s how they met), got married in either 1945 or 1946, I believe.

Arrangements are pending. I will keep you updated to the best of my ability.

He does not suffer anymore.

What a very sad day for you. Your grandfather sounds like a wonderful person. I never met either of mine, since they both died young and before I was born, but I have been told by numerous relatives how great they were, so I feel as if I missed out. At least you had this wonderful man in your life, and can hold on to the memories that you shared. I am just so sorry that your relationship was cut short. I will hold both of you in my thoughts and also say some "Hail Marys" for you, as well, since that is important to you.;(

I loved my grandfathers so very much, but I was especially close to my Papaw Farmer. He passed away in 1977, but I still miss him every day of my life.

I hope your memories of him will ease your grief.
