Poll question: Do you watch the extras on a DVD?

Come on, man! That $20 DVD gives you 50 hours of bonus interviews, 500 minutes of deleted scenes, 1000 minutes out outtakes, a photo gallery, 50 languages to listen to the program to (and it's fun to hear the foreign language to see how they change things), and "where are they now" segments - which can be disturbing if you watch an old movie, where all they say that the star is dead...

Depends on what is in the extras though. The LOTR extras were just 120 hours of stupid sketches and boring crap. Nobody can watch that.

you think that extras refer only to deleted scenes. I agree with you that they usually stink. But there are tons of documentaries and interviews and commentaries on dvds that are fascinating--you should give them a try.

If it's a movie I really love and have seen a few times, I really like the Director's commentaries.

If it's a movie that I honestly care about beyond merely watching the story.

Even for movies that turn out to be below-par. I've always been interested in what it takes to get images to the screen, and some of the extras on DVDs are very revealing. I love to listen to the commentary tracks, too, even running the film multiple times if there're more than one track. Not uncommon for me to play the film and then play it again with the commentary track running. You can learn a lot from those, depending upon who's telling the story.

Some DVDs have excellent extras, or outtakes and delted scenes that could almost provide a second film -- DVDs like that for the Blade and Mummy series, This Is Spinal Tap, Forrest Gump, Love Actually, Big Trouble In Little China, etc. All DVDs should have 'extras,' if any footage is left in the vaults. Definitely a value-added component.
