Any readers of Laura Joh Rowland here?
She's the author of a successful series of crime novels set in late 17th-century Japan. Rowland's attention to historical detail borders on obsessive/compulsive, and I intend that as a compliment!

I just grabbed the paperback edition of her 2003 novel, THE DRAGON KING'S PALACE. And she has a new one out in hardcover, THE PERFUMED SLEEVE.
