I am very partial to Balistreri's on South 13th, and my gf's family is absolutely hooked on Mr. D's. Although they are jerks when it comes to delivery from what I hear. As in complain to them about anything and they'll not ever deliver to you again.

6. It's been a long time since I've had Pizza Inn
but I think it's wrong to 'slash' it in with Pizza Hut which tastes like low-grade cardboard injected with grease. I seem to remember Pizza Inn was fairly decent pizza.

I voted for Mom and Pop because I used to work at one as a teen. Anyone remember Happy Joes? I worked there for 2 years before the owner bailed out and went solo. I actually miss delivering pizzas, it was really fun back in the old days.

15. Happy Joes!?
Me and Happy Joes go waaaaay back. They are headquartered in this area and I'm so old that I remember the first one in the Village of East Davenport. Good old Sauerkraut and Canadian Bacon pizza. In fact, there's one about four or five blocks from this very computer. Ah memories! Where is your Happy Joe's at?

14. Local mom and pop - Antonios Pizza...
In Medford, MA.

Chain: Pizzeria Regina (although the satellite restaurants aren't as good as the original in the North End).

Worst: Bertuccis, California Pizza Kitchen... any "gourmet" type of pizza
establishment.

Pizza was meant to only have 2 or 3 toppings: cheese, sauce and pepperoni . I'll accept more mainstream toppings such as onions, hamburger, mushrooms, etc. However, chicken, tuna fish, broccoli, lobster, carrots, etc is going too far. I'd sooner eat ketchup and Velveeta on cardboard.

46. I love the Pizza Hut buffet
My record is 28 slices, with a norm of 18, six plates 3 slices each. The dessert pizza is great also.

Even the salad bar is good, plenty of toppers like raisins and little noodles.

But those Jessica Simpson commercials are coming as close to repelling me from Pizza Hut as I can imagine. If she is attractive or interesting, I'm happily missing whatever is required to distinguish that.

24. Avoid the lines. Head up to Modern Apizza on State St.
(in New Haven, obviously)

It's the home of the Italian Bomb (about eight or ten toppings), plus it's in an interesting neighborhood to explore before (or after), with (in my day: mid-'90s) craft shops, used book shops, and even a feminist bookstore.

As far as traditional pizza goes, Etna on El Cajon Blvd here in San Diego is the best.

29. California Pizza Kitchen...
Don't let the fact that they've started selling frozen in stores throw ya, they have all sorts of different pizza styles with different crusts - traditional Italian foccacia and crisp cracker crust pizzas, to American to Nouvelle (Caribbian Jerk Chicken Pizza, anyone?)

Not too pricey, either - though the pizzas tend to be sized only from "personal" to medium. They also have some great salads and strawberry lemonaide!

It was "best pizza". CPK is not pizza... quite honestly, I don't know what it is other than somethng to eat. Whatever it is, it's not pizza; if anything, it's a pretentious mockery of the real deal.

34. Mom-n-Pop

I grew up in a really small town. At one point these brothers moved in from Philadelphia and opened what was supposed to be an Italian Restaurant but actually made all its money from selling pizza.

Best pizza I have ever eaten.

Although, there was this place in San Jose that was really good. I think it's closed now. The owner was from Cameroon strangely enough.

35. Funny you should mention Red Baron
I got one going into the oven in about ten minutes. It is by far the best frozen pizza because of the flavor of the sauce and the amount of pepperoni they put on the "Classic Pepperoni." A little added cheddar cheese helps, though.

43. I prefer it to the other RB pizzas...
I don't really like the combo pizza--mushrooms are too slimey.

I like the pepperoni, but, for late night, it's just a little too heavy.

But the four-cheese is heavenly for a late-night snack. When I have friends over for beer and back-porch chatting, I pop one in the oven and then slice it into little squares for appetizers.

Damn things are just delicious. No other way to put it. :-)

Can't beat it. A little cinderblock building with bare concrete floors. The pizza is thin-crusted with an inch of toppings. The beer is cold, served in a frosty mug. You can't top it.

Second would be the brick-oven pizza at Paninos in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It in no way resembles the American pizzas to which we are so accustomed.

47. Tonanno's in Coney Island.
No canned sauce or cheese-in-a-box.

Makes his own sauce from scratch and slices fresh mozzerella, fresh mushrooms... Doesn't have a brick oven, but stuffs mesquite in the standard oven to smoke the pizza.

I have never had anything like his anywhere else.

Ray's on 6th Ave. used to be a good one, but they went with the cheap cheese, although you still get a lot of it. And no brick oven taste.

There are a few brick oven pizzerias around here and there, but although better than average, still not up to Tonanno's.

I'll get a Freschetta or Red Baron before most of the stuff you get around here. Or make one myself with a Boboli.

Some pizzerias will sell you the dough so you can do it right. Need a good oven and a pizza stone, though.
