I hate the fact that the Connecticut Cowboy has trashed Texas to the dogs and back. Even though I don't live there anymore.

8. Y-town
My mom's side of the family is from Youngstown and they alway use the "from" joke too. The city is just sort of sad now.

I was born in Ravenna, Ohio which is a tiny town near Kent State and Akron.

I grew up in a house on Saginaw Bay
My dad was a poor hard working Saginaw fisherman
Too many times he came home with too little pay

All true except for the things about the house, my dad's occupation and the amount of his check.

Least of all the newlyweds in Saginaw, Michigan.
John
Actually, I have two ex-fathers-in law. One, Orville, is a retired Airborne sergeant living in Huntsville, AL (and one of the first thousand non-Green Berets to land in Vietnam in 1965) and the other, Tom, a Marine draftee (yes, it happened) who got two tours over there himself (1968-69). Tom, incidentally, LOVES to go gold panning, but in the UP -- not Alaska.

157. I'm a student at NDSU. I live on campus.
I grew up in three different places in Fargo: In an isolated apartment block in West Fargo, back when there was just field around it (today, that building is in the middle of sprawl-zilla), on 11th Ave. North in a little rented house, and on 8th Street South in a large and beautiful (and cheap) Victorian home. I also lived in Minneapolis for half my life.

91. Huzzah for the Whaling City!!!!
I knew there were other DUers from my home city.

Yeah, it's in rough shape. Terrible city government, Fred Kalisz is a shithead and the city council operates only to nullify any small gains he might make. The worst part though is the MA Governor Mitt Romney, he's taking out a lot of anger on NB.

Cancelled their Purple Line rail stop on Purchase Street half way through construction.

Refused to release funds to allocated to the several drug treatment centers in he city including the big one in Melville Towers.

Refused to release allocated funds to New Bedford High.

The City just lost UMass Dartmouth's downtown campus proposal to fit into the old Star Store building AFTER the building refurb.

The guys running the "Oceanarium" project burned through 8 million bucks in three years without a single thing to show for it other than a scale model and high salaries. They aught to string these bastards up by their toes and dip them into the Acushnet River.

The Acushnet River and NB Harbor are in danger of losing their Superfund cleanup funds (along with any thousand other sites in the US),

And Union Street looks like a neutron bomb went off there.

The fishing fleet is in the shitter, new regs mean no one can make a living from the banks. Georges Bank is closed to shellfishing (scallops) and the Grand Banks can only be fished 1/3 season.

They are trying to get that north-south monstrosity, i.e. the JFK memorial highway, removed to free up livable real estate between and recreate the Acushnet Avenue of old when it ran South to North. But, hey, the funding fell through.

It's bad there... Really bad. I estimate at least 20% unemploytment and at least 50% underemployment. It's really sad, really really sad.

Still, all that said. I still LOVE that city.

Am I insane?

Ocean Park, Ocean Park,
Don't go there after dark

109. I agree. DU is one amazing place
I remember being on, late one night, where everyone was welcoming a girl from England, on her very first post. Another time, this young guy was reaching out because he was visiting relatives in Thailand, for the first time, and did not feel he belonged there and was very homesick. I told him to think, as long as he was there, of DU as his home. It's not such a stretch.:-)

172. I go to the moves there
my boyfriend lives in Whitesboro, 20 miles away. Sherman is the closest theater. It's not a bad town for Texas.

181. I haven't been there for about a year . I attended a funeral for my Uncle.
My parents actually did not live there but had me there because they were from Sherman (DAD) and Denison (MOM) and my mother wanted to use the hospital and Dr. there, so I have had many visits but no time living there. I like it and I like the name of the paper if it hasn't been changed. Is it still the Sherman Democrat? (If you only attend movies there, you might not know.)

Mt Carmel Mercy Hospital on Outer Drive. Strangely, the hospital was only three blocks from our house, so my Mom insisted on waiting until the very last minute to go. She went into labor when Johnny Carson's show started and I was born at 1:05 AM, five minutes after the show ended. :-)
