Is Tofurkey the most disgusting crap on earth?
I just tried this...ugh yecccchh!

Now I like faux meats...and in Thailand I've had some of the best. You can even get a really good soy nugget thing you soak in water and use as meat.

But Tofurkey is just GROSSS!

Now I have been reminded why I eat meat...I may lay off the beef and pork but you will never get me to eat that crap again!

1. veggy hotdogs
Edited on Fri May-21-04 02:32 PM by e j e
I don't know if all veggy hotdogs are disgusting, but my wife and I bought some that were like eating pseudo-meat jello. With jello-skin.

Oh yeah. Turkey summer-sausage. Damn, that's nasty.

4. Actually there are veggie dogs that are just as good as real...
...if not better than some brands of real hot dogs I have had.

I'm not vegetarian but my wife is, so I've tried a lot of the stuff. Some is great and to me even preferable to the real thing. Others you couldn't pay me enough to eat again.

And oddly enough my two favorite restaurants in our area of northern NJ both serve vegetarian cuisine/fake meats.

8. can you recommend any brand names?
I like the idea of meat substitutes, it's just that so many of them are so repulsive. I'd far rather eat straight vegetarian than eat bad substitutes for meat.

10. Well, as someone else mentioned, Morningstar Farms....
Their hot dogs are quite good, as are Tofu Pups. I'm very fond of Morningstar bacon and their sausage. And their chicken patties and nuggets are also quite good in my opinion.

I forget the name of the one brand but if your supermarket has a refrigerated section (usually around the fruit/veggie aisle) there is one brand (Lean something or other) that has a veggie chopped meat that is just amazing in chili or sloppy joe or spaghetti sauce. You almost cannot tell that you are not eating real chopped meat. This same brand also sells sliced deli meats which are also quite good.

But the mack daddy of fake meat products are Morning Star Farms corn dogs. I could eat boxes of those things.

11. Morningstar RAWKS!
I prefer their breakfast patties to real ones!

Tofurkey, on the other hand, is made from slime molds I'm convinced.

Ahhh...but then again so are McDonald's Milkshakes...

16. On more than one occassion....
When my wife was still in grad school at night and I was only having to worry about myself for dinner, I would heat up an entire box of those corn dogs and polish them off. It was pure heaven. I haven't had them in a while though.

19. Don't get the fat free ones
the texture is a little off. The others are relatively low in fat 1 or 2g and are much better. I think it's the Lightlife brand I'm thinking off.

3. Yes it's awful, I'm vegetarian and I tried it once. Yuck!
There are very few imitation meats that are any good. The only ones which are not gross are Morningstar brand. I love their sausage.

5. The Thing Is, I LIKE Tofu
The chinese eat it raw with green onions and miso. Or cooked with ma-po sauce.

But some of the artificial things they do with tofu in the US are disgusting.

6. I had to have it the last 3 Thanksgivings
Cause my then honey was a vegetarian. But this last thanksgiving was the last straw.

He made some kind of marinade for it out of soy sauce and jelly! Now, can you think of anything that doesn't go with all the other fixin's at Thanksgiving than soy sauce????

And since we aren't even together anymore...

9. thanks for bringing this out in the open
The terrible grossness of most meat substitutes is an issue that has been glossed over too long.

The meat-subsitute industry needs to poop or get off the pot: if you can't make a meat subsitute that isn't gross, then stay home and work on it until you can.

18. I'm not sure I understand...
why there have to be meat "substitutes" anyway. What's so good about a beaker of soy and chemicals trying to be a steak? If you don't want to eat the steak, don't eat it, and there's no point in trying to fake it.

I'm a confirmed carnivore, but I do have a fondness for veggies, and I am not interested in the usual soggy, tasteless side dishes served somewhere behind the plate of meat.

What I am interested in is cooking plant things so that they have all their infinite tastes and glories blasting my taste buds and giving me a really good meal. I'll take an acorn squash roasted and stuffed with spinach and mushrooms long before any of these faux "meats" they're trying to shove down our throats.

Hidden treasures, if you can find them, are kosher dairy restaurants. The rules say no milk with meat, so they do things with veggies, noodles, sour cream and other good stuff that is absolutely sublime and make you forget for a minute that meat even exists.

And in terms of health, Tofurkey is more processed than CheezWhiz.

I just have trouble biting into something I know was once a living, breathing, feeling being.
