Mating the ugly wombat
As you know, I am a zookeeper, and I have this wombat I can't mate, because it's too ugly! Any advice on getting the other wombats to mate with it?? :silly:

I've had remarkable success with it.

3. Hey!!!
There is no such thing as an 'ugly' wombat! :grr:

Wombats are Australian and all Australians are beautiful, including my little mate Wallace, pictured below.

Oh! I'm Australian!! Geez, I forgot. :P

5. You're Australian?
How interesting. Have you been here long? How do you find the US? :hi:

6. Yep
Have been here 6 years.

Do I like it here? Yes and no. I find the winters very tough to get through. I'm not used to weather as cold as it gets here.

I do miss Australia a lot, family (I'm one of seven and the only one not in Australia) and friends of course and the weather.
I haven't lived in Australia for ten years though, was in London for four years before I moved here.

I was lucky enough to go 'home' for the whole of February and it was nice to get out of the cold and snow and spend four weeks relaxing on a nice beach.
Geez, I miss that. ;(

But hey, no matter where one lives, you can't have everything, huh?

7. I'd love to visit your country some day, Teddy!
From all I've heard, it sounds fantastic. As far as weather goes, you should try California! The NE has some nasty winters, for sure! I'm from Northern Michigan originally; we're sort of the "Northeast" of the Midwest! Brrr...

Bet you miss them wombats, though. :D

8. I love wombats
They are very cool. 'The bulldozers of the desert.'

One interesting bit of trivia concerning wombats, like kangaroos they have a pouch for their young to develop in but unlike kangaroos, their pouch faces backwards.
Why?
Because wombats dig, dig and dig all night long, they construct amazing networks of tunnels to live in and if their pouches faced forward, they would fill up with dirt and probably suffocate the baby wombat.

Amazing, huh?

Unfortunately some types of wombats are becoming extinct, which is so typical of Australia.
Hundreds of native species have gone extinct there since Europeans first set foot on that continent.

P.S. Is your avatar a pic of Amelia Earhart or some other aviatrix?

11. Thanks for the wombat facts!
That's really interesting!

Yep, that's Amelia Earheart... A free-thinking, independent woman who was far ahead of her times. :-)

10. Oh, I don't believe that for a minute!
When I first moved to the U.S., the immigration officer at Newark airport gave me some very good advice.

She said....."Mr.Salad, whatever you do make sure you watch out for those 'Illinois-ians', they are trouble! 'Michiganianites' are much friendlier!"

Sound advice that. :P

12. D'oh! Except I think I qualify more as an Ohioan...hence my distaste
for our pesky neighbors up north!

I have a Kiwi friend who tells me to watch out for you Aussies as well. ;)

13. Oh please
Kiwis? :eyes:

Do you know at Auckland airport they have a sign over the departure door that reads "Will the last one out please turn off the lights".

Kiwis. They live for their country, they will die for their country, they just won't live in it. ;)

14. LOL! I love friendly geographical rivalries.
I assume the Kiwi-Aussie one is because it's good natured between the two of each that are in grad school with me.

Sorry for ragging on vegemite this weekend. One of the few foods I just don't like...but I can see how one might be able to acquire a taste for it.

15. I've lived in NZ
It was tough.
I was ragged on mercilessly, mostly about rugby which I knew absolutely nothing about.

We play Aussie Rules footy where I come from, not rugby.

But yeah, we are pretty much one and the same and love giving each other a hard time.

You've tried vegemite, DB?
Geez, you're game.
It's the kind of thing one shouldn't experiment with unless you first had it before your second birthday.
Definitely have to grow up on it to appreciate it.

:hi:

Are you the guy that hates cheese? I'm sure they have that in Australia, though. Haven't made it there yet...

And yes, it's in Australia.

YUK! :puke:

I do love bagels.
I was thinking of going back to Australia and starting a bagel business.
Vegemite on a toasted 'Everything Bagel' is delicious! :smoke:

I haven't had vegemite, of course, but I think it would be a hit.

Don't tell me they don't have bagels there, yet? :wow:

21. Actually, they do
Just today I was on the phone to a chick at MCI, trying to get my DSL to work.
We spent an hour trying to figure it out, only for her to tell me in the end that there was a line fault in my area.

She apologised for wasting my time and then said that she wasn't really sorry as she loved listening to my accent.

Of course, I have no accent.

You guys have the accent! :P
