Serious Question! What Do Repubs Listetn To?
I Mean, Finding A Republican Artist Is Pretty Hard To Do Outside Pop-Country. What THE HELL Can They Listen To With A Clear Conscience? Lemme See

Jazz - No Way
Rock - Some, Very Few, Maybe Nugent (Like He's Any Good)
Punk - NO
Folk - HELL NO
Blues - Hell Fuck No!
Pop - Some (Everyone Knows Pop Blows) I'm A Poet :)
Bluegrass - Some (They Probably Have The "O Brother" Soundtrack - Which, BTW, Has A TON Of Liberal Artists On It :)

So What DO Repubs Listen To? Any Lurkers Wanna Reply?

Or Do Republicans Hate Music?

That's A Good Point. You Know I Like Some Gospel Music. Expecially, The Southern Baptist Deep Siritual Stuff - It's Moving. Alas, The Only Thing I Have Close To Gospel Are Old Blues Recordings Of Gospel Like Songs.

7. Stereotyping sucks
I am a member of the Mississippi Valley Blues Society and I happen to know that a past president of the Society is a staunch Republican. And he's a nice guy to boot. A lot of Repubs probably listen to the same music that anyone else does. I mean, they are human after all. It's just stereotyping to say that they listen to this or that or don't listen to something just because they are one political party or another. Music knows no boundaries.

How Can Someone That Despises Liberal Ideas Listen To Bob Dylan? Or Joan Baez? How Can Someone Who Idolizes G Dubya Listen To Dead Kennedy's? How Can Any Staunch Republican Listen To Rage Against The Machine?

I Admire Those That Are In Roughly The Same Ballpark As I Am In.

22. Ok point taken
the bands you mention are indeed liberal, but mostly, music is entertainment. I think Nugent was a helluva guitar player, even though he's a friggin' nutcase, I like ZZTop and used to like Lynyrd Skynyrd(they need to give it up) even though they are considered "conservative" bands. I just like the way they play. The music sounds good to me. That's why I listen and why most people listen. I do admit that I will never buy another Nugent cd or attend another concert by him because of his insane views. But mostly, I listen to tunes because they sound good. I do stand by my earlier comment about stereotyping.

Anecdotally, a friend of mine who was on the road with a band found himself partying with a bunch of folks, including Nugent, one night. He said Nugent didn't do any drinking or drugs but he was the craziest mofo of the bunch.

28. Hey - what's up with capitalizing every word?
Sorry to jump in with a critical remark, but it's hard to read that way. Not as hard as writing in all caps, but hard. It's not good design style, and tough on the conversation.

Make it easy on people - use appropriate punctuation and capitalization, please.

Thank you. I now return the thread back to music.

The republican types I know, even the ones who are interested in music, don't have the same passion as my liberal friends who are interested in music. For the republican types, music is more for background - or else they prefer music that celebrates the unity of people: that is, patriotic music, or fundy Christian music. They tend to prefer music with words, and aren't big on instrumental. They also tend to like easy music: no Yes, Floyd, Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, etc.; they want it either in 4 or in 3. Don Ellis? Forget it.

Not to blanket all republicans and conservatives that way - there are always exceptions, but in terms of the regular working stiff joes I worked with and know, your basic republican is into vapid pop music, patriotic/Christian music, or country music, or classical music that's "nice" and "easy to listen to", like Mozart or verdi. Lots of liberals are as well, but I find the proportion of people who like complex, interesting, and/or politically charged (but not unreflective patriotic jingoism) music tend to be liberals.

And that holds true, in my experience, for all the arts. Metropolitan opera and City Ballet: lots of republicans. BAM: pretty much all liberals. Metropolitan Museum: lots of republicans. Whitney: Mostly liberals.

31. Sorry - It's An Old Old Habit
I Find Very Hard To break from but I will for this reply at least. As for the run-on sentences and broken ass structure english is a second language and I have a bit of a buzz right now.

Now as to the origin of my typing like this - It Started with the Commodre 64 having Both Upper And Lower Case Letters. Many people who were on Bulletin Board Systems at the time started to post like this, Especially in Europe. If you log into Euro boards or Blogs, You will still find a number people still typing like this.

Hope That Helps!

37. Actaully, your punctuation is fine
I only added that in because it is also important, along with the rest.

I think you'll find that it's actually easier to type properly than to support an affectation like capitalizing every word. And it's easier for the readers. And communication is what online fora are all about, right? So why make it more difficult to understand you. Typing in all caps, or with every word capitalized, or l33t speak, etc., is the conversational equivalent of mumbling or talking with your mouth full of food.

I decided against the Commodore 64 and went with the Atari 800 instead. But I won't start a Commodore vs. Atari flame war. It's really too bad that neither company could keep up their stuff and failed so miserably at actually letting the public know they had computers for sale. The computer world would be a lot different, and possibly a lot better, if Apple and IBM hadn't been able to push their stuff into the world, and if Atari had been able to define what computers should be. But, maybe not.

they've covered the entire gamut of music, from rap, to rock, to (unbelievably) death metal (they call it apocalyptic rock, btw). it's an entire alternative culture, so they listen to what genres you listen to, but they have their own artists and white-washed messages. most christian music blows, only the rare few are worth listening to even a song or two. no serious audiophile could withstand restricting themselves to just christian music - so my best guess is most republicans are probably tone deaf and bad dancers and therefore have shunned most music to avoid shame (shame that they eternally feel, shame that makes sex dirty and pleasure abominable - unless they are hurting someone else).

18. Actually, there are republican punk bands
surprised when I found out, due to a Lounge thread a week or so ago.

Though I could only say that while they may be using the musical structure of punk, they really shouldn't call themselves punk because punk is way more than just the configuration of notes and chords - it's an entire, very liberal/anti-corporate/anti-republican attitude.

But, there ya go. There are republican punk bands.

And I bet there's republican jazz, especially in terms of light jazz (which isn't really jazz to me, either) such as Kenny G and shit like that.

24. Same as us. They just think of their "movement" as a "rebellion"
against the liberal media, liberal power structure, and liberal cultural hegemony, and so listen to rebel music and pretend that the ideas therein apply to their foolish fantasies. I appreciate that it sounds like I'm being ironical, but this is true. A lot of them worship Monty Python and assorted other counter-culture icons, completely ignoring (or completely missing the point) that most of their material ridicules people like them.

Go to FR and read people's siglines. Between the "We must support our President!" and "Indict Hitlery Klintoon"s you'll find a few telling or quoting what they like.

45. Nice List
But A Lot Of The Artist You've Listed Are Very Staunch Liberals - Obviously, That Doesn't Bother You, And I'm Not Sure It Should.

Artists (For Me) That I Listen To Almost Always Fall In Sync With My Beliefs - Even Before I've Heard A Lot Of Songs. Maybe I'm Some Sort Of Medium - But I Think It's Because Most Artists Are Liberals..... :)

51. Indeed
many of them probably would consider themselves 'liberals' if asked (I'm thinking of Moby, probably Scissor Scissors) and others are way to the Left of that (Laibach, for instance) and really that doesn't mean much to me. Some might also be right-wingers for all I know or care.

I like the music and after all very little of it -- if any -- is trying to sell me on some policy proposal or another. (If you want that, listen to U2!)

In terms of their social _attitude_ I'd say that clearly if you listen to club/dance/industrial/related genres you probably share a certain set of attitudes that can inform political stances but that's really a matter of an overall libertarian approach to life and resistance to 'authority'.

But in general I think it's kind of pointless to try to read too much politics into popcult.

54. But You Must Admit
You Wouldn't Find A Republican At A Front 242/Front Line Assembly/ Or A Skinny Puppy Concert

Or Maybe You Would, Don't Think So Though!

58. You might be surprised
I don't know too many republicans now, but years ago I knew a few in NYC who hung out at CBGB and others in CA who were part of the whole hardcore scene.

I really think you are trying to read way too much into people's musical tastes.

61. It's What I Do!
Yeah, I Read Into Everything. Young Punkers/Hardcores Will Be Republican At First Before They See The Error Of Their Ways - Usually They Are Anarchist In Mindset Before They Get Politically Motivated, If They Ever Do -

Music Is Art
Art Is Politcal Commentary (Atleast Good Art)

66. That sounds very generalising
and not terribly convincing actually.

But I guess we just will have disagree. IMO 'good art' is never political commentary (of all things!).

I think you are confusing punditry and moralistic grandstanding with 'art.' I hope you don't judge the validity -- or lack -- of a work of art or music based on its overt _political content_ ... that just strikes me as very naive or worse.

69. Maybe I'm Not Being "Clear"
Let Me See If This Makes Sense -

You Are A Political Person I Assume

Music You Listen To, Is Either Politically Indifferent Or Matches Your Beliefs

If It Doesn't Match Your Beliefs, You Probably Don't Listen To It. Whether Or Not The Music In Question Is Good In Your Opinion Or Not

Does That Make Sense?

Generalizing Yes, But It Fits For My Entire Music Collection. My Music Collection Wasn't/Isn't Tailored Around My Political Beliefs, The Albums I have Just Happen To Match My Political Beliefs (Or Maybe Structured Them In The First Place?) Either Way, I Can Look At Someone's Music Collection And Tell You Their Political Affiliation Among Many Other Things With A Slight Margin Of Error.

50. Lyrics To Love
Edited on Tue May-25-04 04:51 PM by HornBuckler
Dig 'Em

Look out your window, baby, there's a scene you'd like to catch,
The band is playing "Dixie," a man got his hand outstretched.
Could be the Fuhrer
Could be the local priest.
You know sometimes
Satan comes as a man of peace.

He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue,
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung.
Good intentions can be evil,
Both hands can be full of grease.
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, first he's in the background, then he's in the front,
Both eyes are looking like they're on a rabbit hunt.
Nobody can see through him,
No, not even the Chief of Police.
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, he catch you when you're hoping for a glimpse of the sun,
Catch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a ton.
He could be standing next to you,
The person that you'd notice least.
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, he can be fascinating, he can be dull,
He can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skull.
I can smell something cooking,
I can tell there's going to be a feast.
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

He's a great humanitarian, he's a great philanthropist,
He knows just where to touch you, honey, and how you like to be kissed.
He'll put both his arms around you,
You can feel the tender touch of the beast.
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, the howling wolf will howl tonight, the king snake will crawl,
Trees that've stood for a thousand years suddenly will fall.
Wanna get married? Do it now,
Tomorrow all activity will cease.
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Somewhere Mama's weeping for her blue-eyed boy,
She's holding them little white shoes and that little broken toy
And he's following a star,
The same one them three men followed from the East.
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Dig It

74. my thoughts and observations on what repigs like
Edited on Tue May-25-04 06:12 PM by drumwolf
--- Country'n'western is a no-brainer.

--- A lot of the more upscale, urban Republicans do tend to like classical music, opera and also vocal jazz (and yes, even "show tunes"), and just music that could be called "old fogey" music.

I worked at Tower Records in New York in the '90s and I actually waited on Mayor Giuliani and Rush Limbaugh on separate occasions, and both of them liked classical music and stuff like Sinatra. BTW, Rush was actually a somewhat cordial man in person, and a little shy; he certainly did not go out of his way to draw any more attention to himself than he would already attract anyway.

--- Hard rock, classic rock and heavy metal tend to be quite popular among a lot of Republicans, and not just Nugent, but pretty much the whole genre, like Kiss, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses. I'm sure plenty of Republicans also like "alternative" hard rock (Alice in Chains, Nirvana) and that atrocious "Nu-Metal" crap too (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.)

By the way, I've read plenty of interviews with Gene Simmons, and even though he's never out and out said he's a Republican or talked about politics at all, he completely has the philosophy and mindset of a Rethug. And like Nugent, he too does not touch drugs or alcohol.

--- The broad umbrella category of "techno/electronic dance music" has its fair share of fans who are Repugs. Much of the subculture tends to attract a mostly liberal crowd, but "Republican techno fan" is certainly not a contradiction to the extent that "Republican punk fan" would be.

ON EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I had a roommate a couple of years ago who was a neocon Republican. He was actually much more into movies than he was into music (and he had great taste in movies, covering the wide spectrum of commercial Hollywood, art-house, Asian action, etc.), but some of the bands he liked included Sinatra, the Beatles, and Sigur Ros. He also liked some techno, trance and house too.

77. because they "rock" and "kick ass"
You know, :headbang: Nirvana attracted a big fan base of meatheads, and I know Cobain was never particularly comfortable with that fact.

I personally knew one Republican who was a big Rage Against The Machine fan, and I suspect that's not as rare as we would think given RATM's lyrics and views. RATM attracted a lot of meathead fans who weren't necessarily into politics.

By the way, that particular Republican was also into a lot of trance, techno and European dance pop (some of it good, a lot of it really awful) and some J-pop (Japanese pop, but he was Asian so that might have had something to do with it).
