the bands you mention are indeed liberal, but mostly, music is entertainment. I think Nugent was a helluva guitar player, even though he's a friggin' nutcase, I like ZZTop and used to like Lynyrd Skynyrd(they need to give it up) even though they are considered "conservative" bands. I just like the way they play. The music sounds good to me. That's why I listen and why most people listen. I do admit that I will never buy another Nugent cd or attend another concert by him because of his insane views. But mostly, I listen to tunes because they sound good. The republican types I know, even the ones who are interested in music, don't have the same passion as my liberal friends who are interested in music. For the republican types, music is more for background - or else they prefer music that celebrates the unity of people: that is, patriotic music, or fundy Christian music. They tend to prefer music with words, and aren't big on instrumental. They also tend to like easy music: no Yes, Floyd, Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, etc.; they want it either in 4 or in 3. Don Ellis? Forget it.

Not to blanket all republicans and conservatives that way - there are always exceptions, but in terms of the regular working stiff joes I worked with and know, your basic republican is into vapid pop music, patriotic/Christian music, or country music, or classical music that's "nice" and "easy to listen to", like Mozart or verdi. Lots of liberals are as well, but I find the proportion of people who like complex, interesting, and/or politically charged (but not unreflective patriotic jingoism) music tend to be liberals.

And that holds true, in my experience, for all the arts. Metropolitan opera and City Ballet: lots of republicans. BAM: pretty much all liberals. Metropolitan Museum: lots of republicans. Whitney: Mostly liberals.

I Find Very Hard To break from but I will for this reply at least. As for the run-on sentences and broken ass structure english is a second language and I have a bit of a buzz right now.

Now as to the origin of my typing like this - It Started with the Commodre 64 having Both Upper And Lower Case Letters. Many people who were on Bulletin Board Systems at the time started to post like this, Especially in Europe. If you log into Euro boards or Blogs, You will still find a number people still typing like this.

I only added that in because it is also important, along with the rest.

I think you'll find that it's actually easier to type properly than to support an affectation like capitalizing every word. And it's easier for the readers. And communication is what online fora are all about, right? So why make it more difficult to understand you. Typing in all caps, or with every word capitalized, or l33t speak, etc., is the conversational equivalent of mumbling or talking with your mouth full of food.

I decided against the Commodore 64 and went with the Atari 800 instead. But I won't start a Commodore vs. Atari flame war. It's really too bad that neither company could keep up their stuff and failed so miserably at actually letting the public know they had computers for sale. The computer world would be a lot different, and possibly a lot better, if Apple and IBM hadn't been able to push their stuff into the world, and if Atari had been able to define what computers should be. they've covered the entire gamut of music, from rap, to rock, to (unbelievably) death metal (they call it apocalyptic rock, btw). it's an entire alternative culture, so they listen to what genres you listen to, but they have their own artists and white-washed messages. most christian music blows, only the rare few are worth listening to even a song or two. no serious audiophile could withstand restricting themselves to just christian music - so my best guess is most republicans are probably tone deaf and bad dancers and therefore have shunned most music to avoid shame (shame that they eternally feel, shame that makes sex dirty and pleasure abominable - unless they are hurting someone else).

I like the music and after all very little of it -- if any -- is trying to sell me on some policy proposal or another. (If you want that, listen to U2!)

In terms of their social _attitude_ I'd say that clearly if you listen to club/dance/industrial/related genres you probably share a certain set of attitudes that can inform political stances but that's really a matter of an overall libertarian approach to life and resistance to 'authority'.

--- Country'n'western is a no-brainer.

--- A lot of the more upscale, urban Republicans do tend to like classical music, opera and also vocal jazz (and yes, even "show tunes"), and just music that could be called "old fogey" music.

I worked at Tower Records in New York in the '90s and I actually waited on Mayor Giuliani and Rush Limbaugh on separate occasions, and both of them liked classical music and stuff like Sinatra. BTW, Rush was actually a somewhat cordial man in person, and a little shy; he certainly did not go out of his way to draw any more attention to himself than he would already attract anyway.

--- Hard rock, classic rock and heavy metal tend to be quite popular among a lot of Republicans, and not just Nugent, but pretty much the whole genre, like Kiss, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses. I'm sure plenty of Republicans also like "alternative" hard rock (Alice in Chains, Nirvana) and that atrocious "Nu-Metal" crap too (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.)

By the way, I've read plenty of interviews with Gene Simmons, and even though he's never out and out said he's a Republican or talked about politics at all, he completely has the philosophy and mindset of a Rethug. And like Nugent, he too does not touch drugs or alcohol.

--- The broad umbrella category of "techno/electronic dance music" has its fair share of fans who are Repugs. Much of the subculture tends to attract a mostly liberal crowd, but "Republican techno fan" is certainly not a contradiction to the extent that "Republican punk fan" would be.

ON EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I had a roommate a couple of years ago who was a neocon Republican. He was actually much more into movies than he was into music (and he had great taste in movies, covering the wide spectrum of commercial Hollywood, art-house, Asian action, etc.), but some of the bands he liked included Sinatra, the Beatles, and Sigur Ros. He also liked some techno, trance and house too.

You know, :headbang: Nirvana attracted a big fan base of meatheads, and I know Cobain was never particularly comfortable with that fact.

I personally knew one Republican who was a big Rage Against The Machine fan, and I suspect that's not as rare as we would think given RATM's lyrics and views. RATM attracted a lot of meathead fans who weren't necessarily into politics.

By the way, that particular Republican was also into a lot of trance, techno and European dance pop (some of it good, a lot of it really awful) and some J-pop (Japanese pop, but he was Asian so that might have had something to do with it).
