1. Connected to a network?
If so, disconnect from it and try again - the network traffic writes back to your hard drive and the defrag has to start all over again.

2. probably bad hard drive
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 04:06 PM by historian
try couple of things - first replace cable see if that helps - if not run scandisk if that doesnt help
then find out which hard drive you have, go to their site and download diagnostic tools - it will check the drive to make sure all is well - if it doesnt pass its a bad drive
usually not being to defrag is a sign of a bad drive - happened to me coupld of times good luck
oops forgot disable screen savers and any program running in the back ground

3. What software have you installed recently?
Anything new? Either boxed software, or downloaded from the Internet?

Did this start happening after a power failure or similar interruption?

And note - CHKDSK is not for defragmenting. It does error-checking, which of course you want to do before you try to defragment (which, if your computer is new, is likely unnecessary).

Double-click My Computer, right-click the C: drive, select Properties, and then click the Tools tab. There are buttons there to error-check and defragment if necessary.
