2. I've never liked her...
I know people who know her and they all agree she's a world-class grade-A beyotch.

However...

this prosecution was insane. She should've been fined 50k and walked away. To prosecute someone for "lying" about their innocence for a crime that never occurred is outrageous.

4. I'd still rather see Ken Lay behind bars than Martha
Mostly just because Lay stole more than 10,000 times as much money as Martha did.

6. Hear, hear! And Shrub and Cheney
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 04:24 PM by SiouxJ
if she got 5 months, they should get at least 5 years!

like Randi just pointed out, she was convicted of LYING! - so when do Shrub and Cheney go on trial?

7. Yes, because...
she seems to be a scapegoat. I don't think what she did was right, but she seems to be the poster child for Crime Fighting Republicans who were more than willing to look the other way on Enron and lots of bigger crooks.

If she deserves 5 months in jail, what should be the punishment for Kenny Boy, Fastow et al. given the much larger amount of money they stole and the number of lives they damaged?

8. I think of it this way:
I personally don't think jail time was appropriate for her in this case, however, she did attack a contractor working next door to her place on the East End with her vehicle a few years back. In my mind, that's what she's doing time for.

19. and that anecdote is one of many
Karma is working its way into her life. Let her enjoy her short stay - maybe she can come up with some cell decorating tips.

13. I know she's not particularly "likeable"
however, I'm infuriated that she is being scapegoated. The whole thing is a massive smokescreen to hide what the rich, repub boys are getting away with.

Her overachieving Uber Hausefrau schtick is harmless next to the taxpayer and small investor rip-offs perpetrated by Ken Lay and friends.

OK...that's my rant for the day. ;-)

15. I just gotta say
that if Martha Stewart is the priority right now...then we're really lost. We have a VP who refuses to let us, his employers, know who he consulted with to come with OUR energy policies. We have an administration which lied about GOING TO WAR. We have an administration which vindictively outed a CIA agent. That's treason. Yet, Martha is the news story for her stock deal.

17. Yes, I do
I like Martha and I enjoyed her show and I am really pissed off that she is a scapegoat for repigs criminals. Gets me that RWingers told women to stay in the kitchen, then you have a woman who did, only she committed the ultimate sin by being so successful. Martha made billions in the work they want all women doing and making that work an art-form then to top it all off she donates money to the Democrats, bad bad Martha. :spank: I hope she becomes an even bigger success once this mess is all behind her, GO MARTHA! :bounce:

18. no
Just because assholes like Lay are not behind (nor may ever be behind) bars, does not make it right to also let Martha off. She is scum, and 5 months is too soft for her inside scam. Anything less than the maximum was easy on her.

She is a vile person, not worthy of pity. I knew this LONG before her stock episode.

(Calling an intern a "worthless human being" for fetching the wrong kind of pliers is one incident that sticks with me. Pure nasty evil).

20. I don't feel bad for her...
She was a stockbroker for Christ sake. She should know better. And why did she lie to the Feds? (With 40 billion I would have a good lawyer by the time I talked to them) If she told the truth she would have received a small fine a could continue going on TV and convincing my wife she sucks because I have to eat BAKED turkey on Thanksgiving. And not the swanky deep fried golden bird.

Hey Martha, some people spend all their time taking care of our kids and can't waste the time making "killer" napkin rings for p-didd* party.

</rant>

And we have enough tennis courts to house all of our white collar criminals.

23. Not just no...
But, hell no.

I don't care what her party affiliation is. Zell Miller says he's a Democrat too. Slime comes in all kinds of colors.

The moral equivalency arguments don't work either. It matters not that she's a woman, that Ken Lay may or may not receive just punishment, or that people really like her doo-dads. She's scum and was scum well before what she did to get herself thrown in jail. As others have said, karma has come around and bitten her in the ass.

Hope it takes a good chunk.

25. I do feel sorry for her. But more important -
the trial is a travesty. An embarrassment. Lady Justice's cheeks should burn with shame.

An outspoken juror - who quite possibly influenced other jurors - perjured himself.

A Government expert witness committed perjury.

At the least, the very least, Martha should have been granted a new trial.

Consider the precedent - suppose YOU'RE charged with a crime. The jurors and prosecution witnesses lie under oath. And then YOU'RE convicted and sent to prison...for...lying???

That, my friends, is not justice. It is the behavior of a kangaroo court or a lynch mob.

And so we should not just feel sorry for Martha Stewart. We should feel sorry for the loss Justice.

27. The wealthy always get insufficient punishment terms.
This isn't restricted to Martha, but it is indicative of a corrupt and unjust society.

5 months is as much punishment as the $174 million in 'hardware vouchers' Microsoft has to give to consumers in Minnesota. :eyes: It's not even real money.

28. I don't "feel sorry" for Martha
but I absolutely agree that she is being used as a scapegoat and that her entire case is primarily a smokescreen for the authorities to pretend they're actually doing something about corporate misbehavior. I'm quite pissed off, not so much that she's going down, but that people like Ken Lay who have done far worse have so far avoided the same fate.
