If you could live anywhere on Earth, where would you live?
Let's say you have enough money to live comfortably in any place in the world. Where would you go?
I'd move to Manhattan. Of course, I want to live somewhere that I don't need to drive. I love the idea of actual public transportation, instead of the skankportation we have here in oklahoma(If you've ever taken a city bus in Downtown OKC, you know what I'm talking about). I just want to live someplace where I'm anonymous and can be exactly who I am without anyone criticizing me for it. I love the idea of living my life with no one but the boss I work for to answer to. We will spend at least a year of our life together living in NYC, hopefully Manhattan. I love that place.

54. Sorry, but that's above the line of pestilence
with all the fire belching smokestacks, flammable rivers, etc.
Before we moved here, I drew a big line across the state just above Columbus and vowed not to live above that line.

But I'm a country person, not a city person. To each his own. Cleveland isn't a bad place to visit every once in a while.

Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 02:55 AM by pagerbear
I see people from a wide range of economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds on NYC subways and buses. Some of them piss me off, some of them look like their lives are infinitely more interesting than mine (OK, that wouldn't be so hard to accomplish). What I would call "skankportation" is where the ridership is much more consistently very poor people, people who live in car country but can't afford a car. (Not that I mean to call poor people skanky!)

43. I was just referring to the litter and grunge
which depends on the line you take I guess. The F is really busy and crowded and it's always kind of gross. There's no better way to start the workday than by dropping your keys in a puddle of urine (I'm just grumpy because this happened to me a few days ago). No, the *people* I see every day are the #1 reason I love New York. I've encountered more thoughtfulness and niceness from total strangers here than I ever did in my "close-knit" hometown. :)

Preferably on one of the uninhabited islands (most of them are...there are over 70 large islands in southern Chile, but only about 20 are inhabited, and we're talking big Kauai sized islands). Most people aren't aware of Chile's natural beauty, but southern Chile looks a lot like New Zealand, only bigger and with more active volcanoes, and with a fraction of the population :)

20. Exactly where I am!

Public Transportation? Nope. *sigh* Cost of living? Ow! Natural beauty? Yeah, Hey! We are on the outermost edge of the city, in the country, really. Yesterday, I hiked up the arroyo to collect some rocks for our garden. I found some lovely quartz and obsidian next to a sandstone formation carved by the wind and water. I gazed out across the mesa and heard thunder in the far distance. It was a five minute walk from my back door.

Aaaaahhhhhhhhh! God's Country.

Get myself a big chunk of land, a tiny vineyard, my own garden, and maybe have a few more babies running around. I just want to slow life down a bit. Probably in Clare, near Miltown Malbay. Every morning, my breakfast would weigh three pounds and I'd light me a turf fire.

Around 10:00, I'd drive north awhile so I could Buck Dance on The Burren.

Every evening, I'd take my fiddle down to the pub and jam "June Apple" or "Soldier's Joy" with a girl who plays the Uillean pipes. Neither of us would ever have to pay for a pint or a glass of Black Bush.

A couple of times a month, I'd drive over to Cork to score some of what must be the best homegrown weed in the world.

I'd keep a place in metro Detroit for shopping trips and getaways.

I'd love to live on Lake Michigan. That part of the state is so beautiful. My grandpa lives on the Old Mission penninsula, which is in Grand Traverse Bay and runs north out of Traverse City. It is so wonderful there-lots of beachfronts, pretty houses, cherry farms, rolling hills and wineries with free tasting rooms.

67. Right where I am
I live in Boston near the Gardner Museum. I walk to work every day, right past the Museum of Fine Arts. The Huntington Theatre is right across the street from my office (almost any Bostonian can tell you where I work...). The public transportation system (the MBTA, or in the local vernacular, the "T") takes me just about anywhere I need to go. I don't even own a car, but there is a reliable rental agency within eyesight of my 12th floor view of downtown.

If I ever had to leave Boston, I would love to live in Paris (been there several times, and it always feels to me like I must have lived there in a former life), or Amsterdam ('nuff said...), or London (which I've only seen for a few hours last fall, but wow!).

Yes, I'm a city boy. I love the country life, but I could only visit, not live there.

75. Berwick-on-Tweed, England.
I saw it out of train window and fell in love. I took a separate vacation there a few years later. My dream is to buy a townhouse overlooking the river when I retire.

77. I'll just buy a house on the English side of town.
Maybe in York?

I knew there was something I liked about it anyway.

I want to live there when I'm 80 and insane and have piles of empty birdcages and walk around frightening the children.

Ya gotta dream.
