Has anyone seen my D Drive?
It seems to have gone missing.

It's not on the My Computer list
It's not in the Devise Manager
It's not in System Information > Components >Multimedia> CD Rom
It's not under the bed

Could the new hard drive we had to have installed need some kind of something or other to recognize it?

The cd tray won't even activate.

I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Sounds like it is not plugged in or not plugged in all the way. Was this hard drive a replacement or an addition? Does the light come on?

The hard drive has nothing to do with the CD Rom being "seen" by the OS.

Is your computer operating properly otherwise?

5. thanks - I'll see if I can answer your questions
The hard drive was a replacement. The original one went kerplooy.

Does the light come on? Do you mean the light that says the comp is working? Yes, I'm using the computer right now.

Are you saying there might be a connection inside the case that wasn't reattached? Woe is me.

No woe... just check what is on the board now... 99% positive you have a simple problem... requiring a simple solution.

2. Need to check if the cable and power cord are plugged into the CDROM.
It's possible that whoever installed your hard drive didn't connect the CDROM cables properly.

6. Inside the box?
Nooo, say it isn't so. I only operate 'outside the box'.

10. Yep, inside the box.
There is a power cord that should be plugged in and a flat data cable that needs to be plugged in also.

Also doublecheck that the data cable is plugged in correctly to the motherboard.

Here's a link that may help.

12. I tell my 7 year old granddaughter
"We're strong, competent, intelligent, liberal women. Let's do this." whenever she needs a bit of help or a boost.

Guess I need to find some of that courage for myself.

Thanks for the link, I'm checking it out now.

3. Goto...

Control panel>system management> drive management. See if it shows up there.

Is it a new drive? Did you format it?

If you get it running, here is a speed tip: Move your swap file to the second disk. Vroom. At least Vroom'er than you are now.

OOps...On edit: That is a hard drive tip. If this is a CD, there is a good chance that if the cables are all plugged up that the CD has gone to its final reward. The better news is that replacements are cheap and prolly faster.

7. Frustration.
I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you are saying beyond checking in the Control Panel - and no, it's not showing up anywhere it used to be.

I'm afraid it might be that the guy who installed the new hard drive didn't reconnect something or other.

4. Windows 98? ME? 2000 Pro? NT? XP? Linux?
Could be a disconnected h/w cable, but adding a new drive might change the drive letter configuration, particlarly with Win 95/98/ME...

I'm showing a floppy (A) and a local disk (C), but there's no D drive listed.

13. Its at my house. Come get it please............
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 10:06 AM by foamdad
its eating all my food and scaring the neighbor children.

Seriously, if all cords and cables are intact and still you have nothing, try re-installing the drivers for the CD-ROM and see if XP recognizes it then.

14. Quick, throw a blanket over it.
Wrestle it to the ground and try to get the keys from it. I'm afraid it's been drinking again.

Please don't let it try to drive home in the condition it's in. I'm on my way.

Sorry about the kids. :-(

-----

I'm going to shut it down and open it up to take a look. I don't have an anti-static wristband. Should I tape dryer sheets on my arm?

15. Good for you............
I think the cables are the likely culprit, especially since you had the new HD installed recently. Your CD-ROM IDE or power cable may have been knocked loose. If not, go to the CD-ROM's manufacturer's website and download the newest drivers and see if that don't kick it in the pants.

Good luck. And yes, go for the dryer sheets. It won't help with the static, but it'll make you smell dryer-fresh!

16. How about that?
Not quite sure what happened, or what I did, but it's working now.

Followed the wires and checked the connections, and everything appeared to be hooked up. Thought 'oh well, maybe the cd/dvd part itself needed to be replaced' and shut it back up for now.

Reconnected the spagetti on the back, plugged it in, and it's working.

Maybe something was just loose.

soup's toilet and computer repair manual:

toilet - Jiggle the handle.
computer - Jiggle the wires.

Thank you all for your help. You're the best. :loveya:

17. Yea!!! Good job. Computers can be soooo temperamental!
Whenever my husband's computer decides to act up he calls me into the room. Sometimes all I have to do is walk past the machine, and it will do what it is supposed to. I tell him he has a negative aura, and it just needs to feel my positive aura. Whatever it is, it makes him crazy. :P
