14. Anyone else notice that they don't show Popeye any more?
I wonder why? It was a bizarre cartoon. Those hairy goons were freaky.

17. If you ever get the chance...
see the ones from the 30's and 40's. You can't watch Popeye and Bluto all the time, you have to look "around" the main characters. You will see, in several episodes, a whorehouse; a Jewish Deli, with a caricature Jew in the window; a whole lot of bars; and other interesting stuff. The ones from the war years are the best. In one, Bluto...(soon to be Brutus), join up and beat the axis powers. Popeye gets all ticked off, eats his spinach, and sends his fist on a worldwide journey. First it bashes Mussolini in the mug, knocking him silly. Then it clobbers Hitler big time, and finally winds up flying into Tokyo, to smash into Hirohito, sitting atop his white horse, coke bottle glasses and bucked teeth to boot. When the smoke clears, Hirohito's head is sticking out of the horses butt. I kid you not. Propaganda was, and is, a powerful tool.

As time went by, Popeye kind of mellowed out a bit. But in the ones from the '30's-40's, if you listen to him mumble, really closely, you can hear him cussing up a storm.

Olive Oyl was blushing half the time because of cracks Popeye would make, and no one ever did explain Sweet-Pea...;) Supposed to be a nephew, um,hm...:)

18. I've seen several B&W Popeye eps
back in the 70's. I assume those were the ones you're referring to. I actually have a few of them on 8mm film. I never liked the newer ones, but there we're some great early color episodes like 'Sinbad The Sailor'. The animation was gorgeous in that one.

I really think it would play well on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

16. Played very well by Paul Dooley in the movie
That starred Robin Williams.

He also played the owner of the clown entertainment agency in Shakes the Clown, starring Bobcat Goldthwait, which had a cameo appearance from Robin Williams as Mime Jerry, a sadistic red-neck sounding mime instructor who thought he was all that because he had been to France.

How's that for wacky movie linkage?
