Happy Anniversary to my amazing, liberal Mom and Dad!
I wanted to publicly acknowledge my parents' 41st wedding anniversary today. So, happy anniversary to two of the most loyal, liberal Democrats out there!

There is no way I, their only child, could sit here and list everything they have done for me throughout my life, but I will at least give it my best shot. My parents are the most generous people you could ever meet. My dad is a first-generation American and my mother grew up in crushing poverty, yet they always worked hard to give me everything I ever needed. Dad still gets tears in his eyes when he talks about the day Kennedy was assassinated, and he believes in all that is good about America.

My dad taught me the value of saving for a rainy day; now that I've been living in a monsoon this past year, I'm grateful for his good financial sense. My mother is a lifelong community volunteer and champion of the underdog, a trait I seem to have inherited.

My first political memory is of the 1972 election. My parents (especially Mom) hated Nixon with a raging passion, and my mother had volunteered to take elderly and disabled people to the polls (this was before absentee voting was so common). We sat by the phone all day long, and it didn't ring once. She was crushed. But two years later, I fondly remember her dancing on the coffee table when we watched Nixon resign. :)

I won't rehash the unpleasantness of my life this year, but my parents have been there for me every minute, helping me financially and emotionally. I honestly don't know what I would do without them, and I want to thank them for instilling in me a sense of real patriotism, not the jingoistic, flag-waving kind, but service toward others, a willingness to accept and celebrate our diversity, and a belief that better times are always right around the corner.

Thank you, Mom and Dad, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you've done for me. I wish I had a wedding picture of them handy, but I do have this one of my mom on their honeymoon up in Vancouver.

I love you guys. :loveya:
