Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 01:04 PM by HEyHEY
Some are native names, others are British discoverer names and some are inuit names. Of course, two are named after Saints.

I believe Montreal came from Mont Royal (Mount Royal) Which is in the area. Whitehorse and yellow knife have cool stories behind them I bet

8. PEI
PEI was named PEI because the local beer has a very quick bottle-to-loo time.

They were actually going to call it "PEE" but since the locals were pronouncing it to rhyme with "eh", PEI it was.

And that's the truth.

11. Here goes.
Vancouver is of Dutch origin, named for Capt. George Vancouver, RN
Calgary is Gaelic, named after a farm on Mull
Saskatoon is a native name shared with a local berry.
Winnipeg - I have no idea.
Toronto - No idea.
Montreal - Mount Royal
Charlottetown - Queen Charlotte
Halifax - Named for the East Anglian town, possibly because of a connection with the Earl of Halifax (if there in fact, is one)
As to why there are two St Johns, or more correctly one St John's and one Saint John, I don't know.

17. Probably
Because one was named by the French, and the other the English.

Interestingly, St. John's Newfoundland is the oldest city in North America (I'm told by a newfie so it doens't hold much water)

No, it's Calgary.
The Edmonton region may possibly have a higher population (although I don't think it does), but the City of Calgary is about 45% bigger than the City of Edmonton.

33. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not sure I even
know all the provinces.

Quebec - Montreal
Alberta - Calgary
Northwest Territories - Yellowknife (I think it's the capital, but not sure if it's the largest)
British Columbia - Vancouver
Saskatchewan - Moosejaw
Manitoba - Winnipeg
Ontario - Toronto
Yukon - I have no fucking idea
Newfoundland -
Prince Edward Island - ????
Nova Scotia - Halifax
New Brunswick - No clue

Wow, I'm terrible. Not even sure if I got all the provinces. I'm guessing I got four right.
