16. OR MAYBE NOT! My friend wieghs in thusly;
**** **** says:

"Who knows. They are simply taking the Academy's word for it that it didn't happen, What I recall is, Palance read 4 names as nominees. He did not read the 5th name (Tomei). He then said the winner is, Marisa Tomei. She was listed in all surveys as the least likely winner.

Do I believe that the Academy would interrupt the show and take an Oscar out of someone's hands and give it someone else? No, I don't believe they would."

I said:

"it seems to explain the procedure pretty well, with the card and the names not being in the script as the story goes....."

**** **** says:

"But Tomei's name would have been on the screen, to be read as the fifth nominee. Not to be read as the winner. All they would have to do to shut down the rumor is play the videotape, and show the card with her name on it. I've never heard of that happening."

Well there we go! We may NEVER know.

I mean, the real winners are written in the envelopes.

9. Because I like copycat threads....
and because she wasn't the best actress of the lot that year... by any stretch... but that's just my opinion.

12. ah . . . didn't realize til after i posted this was copycat
I thought it should've gone to Judy Davis that year. But she isn't the first, and won't be the last, to be so "robbed." Think Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction."

Besides, I really liked Tomei in that movie. Especially when the prosecutor is doing his "voie dire" and she explains why his auto repair question is a trick question.

13. I'm not saying she didn't have some good moments...
but overall, definitely NOT a world-class performance.

14. Agreed. The Academy is weird that way.
I think she got it because a lot of voters had seen her and loved her on Broadway. And I think Cher's for "Moonstruck" was a consolation prize for no nom. for "Mask" and not getting it for "Silkwood." JMHO.

6. That was always one of those perplexing Oscar wins.
Like Kim Basinger winning for "L.A Confidential"

Or Catherine Zeta Jones for "Chicago"

Wondering if the Academy voters watched the same performances I did. :-)
