I've got to see it again, to understand all the symbolism...but it's a visual delight! I don't think I've seem a film that was as beautifully photographed since David Lean's films where the cinematography was as beautiful, symbolic and as gripping as this film is.

I've been thinking about it all day...and trying to get all the "clues about war/anti-war/uniting and dividing...issues in that film.

But...aside from "the message" it's just a beautiful cinematograph treat with "color" used in such a way that goes to one's gut.

Try to see it..and particularly you "more sensitive/feely DU'ers" who love pagentry, fable, symbolism and mysticism. Lot's there to ponder over for a long time..for me, at least.

1. It was not the Kung fu heavy movie I was expecting
but it was very beautiful and good on all accounts once I got past realizing it wasn't going to be what I thought it would.

2. I went with my son
he mentioned the slow pace and the lack of up-close martial arts conflict.

I thought the Rashomon-like exchanges between Nameless and the Emperor were great. Some scenes reminded me of the battles in LotR the cineamatography (sp?) was phenomenal.

We both liked it, though I liked it much more.

Certainly worth the money/trip.

I enjoyed the movie, but will definitely have to see it again on the big screen. Not as much high flying wuxia martial arts as I expected going in, but there is some of that there. It's a beautiful movie and very well done.

Some think the emperor's plea about uniting all under heaven is a political statement about uniting Taiwan with mainland China.

Zhang Yimou is considered my most Chinese to be their best director. For the gossip mongers, there have been rumors about him & some of his female co-stars: first Gong Li starred in several of his movies, and now Zhang Ziyi has...
