NYers couldn't wait until he left office. After the Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, and Patrick Dorismond police-abuse scandals and his blame-the-victim defense that polarized the city along racial lines; his extramarital affairs and his shameless posing with Judy Nathan for the TV cameras obviously not caring about the effect on his young children; his closed-door, fortress approach to City Hall access; and his focus on petty law enforcement to the exclusion of addressing more serious problems such as homelessness, he should have sent Osama a thank-you note for rescuing his political career. From the rubble of the World Trade Center, a new Rudy arose and has soared ever since. He caught the ball and ran with it.
He is now plying his revalued brand as a private security consultant, winnning lucrative contracts from cities and countries too. Evidently many are eager to glom on to Rudy's aura of authority and confidence.
Listening to Rudy at the convention tonight, you can appreciate how skillful a politician he is. His speaking style is direct, self-effacing, engaging, and articulate--some might say he sounds sincere. In an age where appearance is everything, Rudy is what he seems to be just because he puts on a good show.
I must say that, much as I dislike Rudy, Kerry could learn much from studying his effect on people.
