Star Trek fans say goodbye to Scotty.
I'm gonna miss Scotty! :(

LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of "Star Trek" fans bade farewell to James Doohan as he appeared at one last convention before retiring from public life.

The 84-year-old actor who played "Scotty" decided to retire after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several months ago. He blew kisses to a crowd of Trekkie faithful gathered at the Sunday finale of a two-day tribute held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.

Doohan, who also has Parkinson's disease and diabetes, mingled with fans and spoke at a news conference between Scotty impersonation contests and a panel discussion titled "The Influence of Scotty on Society."

1. Very sad...

I wouldn't wish that disease on anybody. Except Bush. And DeLay.

4. An Incredibly Nice Guy
Scotty was my favorite character on Star Trek since I started watching it. Jimmy Doohan was a war hero, a damned good actor, and he really brought some presence and enthusiasm to the series and the movies. I loved the shows when he got to command the Enterprise. I'll miss him and I hope he finds peace.

5. Brings tears to my eyes.
I loved the character, love the man. I'm glad that at the very least, he was able to do this. And to get his star on the walk of fame. sigh, can't say more cuz it's just so sad.

11. God bless James Doohan
Scotty is one of the all-time classic TV characters. Always enthusiastic, even when he couldn't quite coax anything more out of the warp nacelles for Captain Kirk. (Of course, he always found a way.)

The ST:TNG episode he was in is one of my all-time favorites. I wept when he sat on the bridge of the old Enterprise.

Some here may not know that he was missing a finger from his activities in World War II. He always kept this hand out of frame or hidden behind a console, clipboard, or behind his back, because Gene Roddenberry didn't think a missing finger was appropriate in the 23rd century. I'm sure the Freepers today would wonder how Doohan was so wimpy that he didn't lose the whole hand.

A :toast: to James Doohan.

12. I live by one of Scotty's rules of engineering:
Never say how long something will really take. That way, you get the reputation for being a "miricle worker".

godspeed Jimmy!

16. Live long and prosper Scotty
I shook his hand at a con once. He was so great to the fans, he really loved us and you could tell he enjoyed just being around us. He also had a great sense of humor.

My thoughts are with him and his family. What a heartbreaking situation.
