Test other speakers first
Also, go to your control panel, go to "System", then click the "Hardware" tab, then choose "Device Manager". Make sure you don't have any yellow question marks on any devices.

1. Some obvious checks... is the volume up/muted? Are the speakers plugged
into the correct input of the sound card? Did the sound card come with a drivers/installation CD? Did you let auto-detect new hardware run? (I know these all sound obvious, but it's usually something simple.)

2. did your mother board have "onboard sound" before you got the card.
if so you will have to disable the onboard sound in the bios.

7. if you have had this sound card working before, then i don't think
you have onboard sound on the motherboard.

why did you have to reinstall the sound card if it was working before?

what operating system do you have? (windows 98, xp, 2000)?

it could be that the sound may be muted in windows, tell me what version you have and maybe we can see about making sure the sound isn't being muted in windows.

10. do this
go to start->control panel->sound and audio devices

on the volume tab, make sure 'mute' under device volume is not checked.
also click the 'advanced' button the volume tab, this will open a new window that is kind of like a mixer for you sound, look for the 'Wave' column and make sure the volume slider is not all the way down or that it is not muted. also make sure that the volume control slider is not all the way down or that 'mute all' is not checked.

you can then go over to the 'sounds' tab and in the box that says 'program events' you can see the sounds your computer plays when it does things, you can make it play the selected sound by clickin the triangle play button to the left of 'browse'. this will play whatever sound is selected. you can just click on 'asterisk' and then hit the play button and you should hear the sound.

also, select the audio tab and make sure that your sound card is selected in the drop down box under 'sound playback, default device:'

see what happens.

6.  is there a way to fix this.
Most likely... right click on My Computer (your computer actually, you would have a hard time clicking on "my" computer unless of course your name was John Ashcroft) and select properties.

Click on device manager tab,

see if under sound devices your card shows up and if there is a yellow question mark next to it, or if there is (are) unknown devices listed too.

Perhaps you have a driver problem... the device manager will help you determine this.

Try these links for some insights.... luck to you.

9. Go to Control Panel.....
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 09:27 AM by Radicalliberal
click on "sounds and Audio"
click on "Audio"

On "sound playback"..do you see your card listed? if not, click on the Pull-down menu and select it.

On Edit: Sometimes if you have an "onboard sound chip" The (usually shitty) card that came with the motherboard AND a card that you installed yourself, Windows will sometime go back to the onboard chip and make it the default.
I fix Computers and see this all the time...

13. I had a problem with my speakers after I reformated... (fix)
First: start menu/programs/accesories/entertainment/sound control.

Advanced: Try setting digital output. If it is set, unset it.

Go to Control panel, click sound. Make sure that your sound card is detected. While there, set your speaker number/setup.

If that doesn't help, go to the sound card website and get all the latest drivers/utils.
