Poll question: How old are you?
I'm just curious about DU's demographic age distribution. Feel free to keep this thread kicked for a few days so the sample is of more than just Friday night DUers ages.

of my 18th birthday next week.

I don't think too much about age. Mom's 86, a ballroom dancer (competetively), swims about a mile a day (in the ocean) and looks less than 70.

Age is in the body, but it's never in the mind.

on edit: the last day of my 1000 mile ride:

Age is in your body. I felt about 20 that day.

Yes, that photo was taken in the parking area for viewing the Matanuska Glacier off the Glenn Highway. We'd just ridden from Glennallen, about 150 miles east.

I go to grocery stores to buy beer and they post signs that say "Under 30? We card those under 30." So, I'm over 30, but I'm still getting carded.

12. New Dealers just might be here!
Some folks could be over 80. Haven't you read posts about WWII vets who are doing lots of thinking about what's going on?

Also, people who are 80+ remember one of the greatest American presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Don't knock folks in their 80s! I correspond regularly, about academic subjects, with a person who is 81 years of age.

And, if you're 80+, welcome to DU!!!!!

And my son is 16, my daughter is 22. I think they keep me young..er.
And their friends seem to like me. Except when I ask them ... "So where is the honor in that?" They really hate that. But I've only asked it a couple of times... or so. And in a kindly way.

20. 41 next Wednesday
and I've never felt better. I'm in much better shape physically than I was in my 20s - mid 30s. I'm about 20 lbs lighter too! I have more confidence in myself. 40s are gonna be great!

Northofdenali had it right. Feeling old is in your head, which you can remove.

90. But I don't want to remove my head!
Even if it does make me 20 pounds lighter.

But seriously, happy belated birthday, and welcome to the club -- I'm 41 but I usually still think that I'm about 23 years old, until the aches and pains kick in some mornings. I need to figure out a way to shed the weight I've gained over the past few years -- I used to play Ultimate (badly, but I still played) until I hurt my leg, and the inactivity caused me to gain about 25 pounds. (Well, the inactivity plus the eating, I guess.) Leg's better, but now I'm worried I'd have a heart attack if I tried playing again.

I need to find a way to ease back into a more active lifestyle. Hmmm....I guess sitting here posting on a Saturday afternoon is NOT a way to do that. Okay, I'm logging off for now.

109. Post-birthday
Ha Ha, I guess I did word that a little funny, didn't I?

You sound like you used to be very athletic. I used to envy people like you. I was always the sedentary type (reading, movies, theatre, TV, etc) until I found activities that are right for me. I'm not much of a competition or team sports person; I enjoy solo or duet activities like yoga, stretching, pilates, swimming, cardio machines.

I have a couple of heart murmurs which sometimes make me tired, but exercising keeps the general fatigue away. I started out just walking, even if it was only 10mins/day.

The past year I added free weights for about 15 mins/every other day.

I was sick with a GI problem for most of May/June and have spend July recovering. I'll head back to the gym sometime this week. I sure do feel better when I go.

111. Me? Athletic? Lord, no!
I think I still hold the high school gym class record for getting hit in the face with a basketball.

I used to bowl a lot when I was younger, but haven't recently, and was on a softball team for a year or two, but that's about it. I was never really athletic (or thin, for that matter). I played ultimate a couple of times in college, and loved it, but didn't discover any organized ultimate groups until I was about 30, and played until I hurt my leg.

I don't mind team sports, as long as they're not too competetive (I play for fun, not necessarily to win) -- but too many people around here like their sports to be "intense", and that tends to turn me off. (Some of the ultimate folks were too intense, IMO, so I just stuck with pick-up groups and avoided the leagues.)

I've got a doctor's appointment coming up this week -- general physical, which I haven't had in over five years (and I've NEVER had an EKG before), so I might try to get on some kind of exercise plan based on the results of the physical.

I like the idea of just starting out walking. I guess I need to start getting up earlier in the morning.

She was seventeen when she got pregnant. My wife had her when she was twenty-one. My wife is eight years older than me. Do the math.

So he's not biologically my grandson. I don't care. I adore him.

still its a wild world. Lemme think about something ok my great grandmother well not really died in the 20's. Her oldest daughter had a child in the 30's. If she had lived she would had been a biological granny in her 40's. Lemme explain this ok. My great grandfather first married in the early 1900's his first wife died of Tuberculosis in the 20's. He then married again to a young woman the mother of my grandmother. His daughter had a child before my two aunts so my aunt was in affect a aunt before she was born. My dad was an uncle at age 7 and he considers his nephew a brother in ways.

66. Skewed a bit toward the younger end though...
Several possible reasons for this:

1. The older generation is less likely to use computers (I find this to be the most likely explanation)

2. The older generation is less interested in politics (unlikely)

3. The younger generation is more willing to post their age in this thread (possible, probably not since it's a poll and there's no names attached)

4. There are demographicaally fewer older people in the US (I'm fairly certain this is false)

Any others I didn't think of?

64. Sort of as I expected
I always thought there were a lot of 30 somethings here (like me :-) ) . I wonder if this is different for GD or other forums or pretty much the same. I'm guessing the same.

In two weeks I'll have to click the 61 to 70 category. Middle age is getting later and later. :D

100. Let's just say I'm "early turquoise," and let it go at that.
I work out 6 hrs/week -- swimming and boxing. No ass-sitting for me. I goof around, joke, play catch with my stepson until he's bored. I'm more focused now that anyother time in my life.

Becoming an "old person" is just fine -- it happens to us all, if we're lucky; but becoming an "old, *sick* person" -- well, that you want to avoid for as long as possible.
