Should DU Users Be Allowed To Change Their Names...
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 12:32 PM by arwalden
as easily as they change their underwear?

Or should there be some sort of name-change approval committee to examine the impact that the name change will have on the flow of DU and the continuity of the camaraderie in the Lounge (and throughout DU as a whole)?

Should there be a rule that once you've reached 1000 posts, you are stuck with your name forever? (After all... 1000 posts is PLENTY time enough to decide if the name "works" or if it suits your personality and online persona.)

Here today, gone tomorrow... who do you trust? The carefully cultivated friendships are just TOSSED AWAY by the name-changer... only to have them magically re-appear as someone else (and expect to be treated the same as before).

Let this message serve as a warning to other newbie DU'ers.... CHOOSE YOUR NAME WISELY. --- Once chosen, it becomes like a tattoo that you just can't wash off. It's like herpes... you're stuck with it. It's like a reputation... good or bad, you own it!

5. Welcome, ScreaminglordBob!
We're part of a trend.

Everyone should change their names! There should be quotas. No fewer than 2 name change polls per week.

AS you say, others will follow. It's kind of nice to be near the front of the line. :)

3. I wish we could all be allowed **one** name change at any time...
But only one. We would be allowed to keep our post count, too.

Just wishing.

18. I support unlimited name changing
the only justification for taking that away from DUers is to allow them to login under more than one name at any time.

23. Let em change
Internet rules shouldn't be more stringent than in real life, where people change their names all the time. And it's more honest than multiple IDs.

I think people feel pressured to get their first 1000 posts to establish some street creds. Has anyone here never eyeballed someone's lower post count with some suspicion?

I'm thinking of changing mine because too many people take it the wrong way. They think it's some general directive to all, when in fact it refers to just one in particular.

My sincerest appleojeez Allen, Terry et al.

Wat who was Mumbling Peasant Steve, who was Screaming Lord Byron, who was (briefly) number six who accidentally once signed up under his real name but who promises to remain Wat Tyler for a good lenghthy period of time.

and I have found, through experience, that people don't take serious posts by Screaming Lord Byron particularly, uh, seriously.

28. I claim status, perhaps the only DUer who managed to misspell his own name
It was supposed to be Awsi, no "e", named after my poodle Awsi. He's 15 years old on Thursday, debate day, so you would think I would know his name as of fall 2002, when I registered on DU.

Every time I look at the user name I feel like a world class moron. Some vague memory of writing Awse, then punching in the "i" but obviously forgetting to evict the "e".

37. time for multiple random names?
everytime you login you are assigned someone's last login name. If you make a donation to DU, you can be assigned two random names. Whenever any single user is banned, DU keeps that person's last login names. This means logging in by using the last assigned password each time. Whenever you logout, you're assigned a new password.
