I Used to Be a Country Music DJ -- Let Me Play a Song For You!
Lonesome?
Wife, kids, and dog run off?
Madly in love?
Got a crush on someone who don't know it?
Pissed off at the world?

Tell me your situation, and I will play a country song for you.

1. May I request The Revolution Starts Now, by Steve Earle?
The Revolution Starts Now
Steve Earle (new CD title song)

I was walking down the street
In the town where I was born
I was movin¡¦ to a beat
That I¡¦d never felt before
So I opened up my eyes
And I took a look around
Saw it written ¡¥cross the sky
The revolution starts now
Yeah the revolution starts now

The revolution starts now
When you rise above your fear
And tear the walls around you down
The revolution starts here
Where you work and where you play
Where you lay your money down
What you do and what you say
The revolution starts now
Yeah the revolution starts now

Yeah the revolution starts now
In your own backyard
In your own hometown
So what you doin¡¦ standin¡¦ around?
Just follow your heart
The revolution starts now

Last night I had a dream
That the world had turned around
And all our hopes had come to be
And the people gathered ¡¥round
They all brought what they could bring
And nobody went without
And I learned a song to sing
The revolution starts now

Yeah the revolution starts now
In your own backyard
In your own hometown
So what you doin¡¦ standin¡¦ around?
Just follow your heart
The revolution starts now

Yeah the revolution starts now
In your own backyard
In your own hometown
So what you doin¡¦ standin¡¦ around?
Just follow your heart
The revolution starts now

4. "Break Down Here" by Julie Roberts
Mile marker 203
The gas gauge leanin on the edge of E
I'll be danged if the rain ain't pourin down
Somethin smokin underneath the hood
It's a-bangin and a-clangin and it can't be good
It's another 50 miles to the nearest town
Everything I own is in the back in a Hefty bag
I'm outta cigarettes and I'm down to my last rag

I'd sure hate to break down here
Nothin up ahead or in the rear-view mirror
Out in the middle of nowhere knowin
I'm in trouble if these wheels stop rollin
God help me keep me movin somehow
Don't let me start wishin I was with now
I've made it this far without cryin a single tear
I'd sure hate to break down here

Under fifty-thousand miles ago
Before the bad blood and busted radio
You said I was all you'd ever need
Love is blind and little did I know
That you were just another dead-end road
They were pretty lies and broken dreams
Baby leavin you is easier than bein gone
I don't know what I'll do if one more thing goes wrong

It's to late to turn around
I'd sure hate to break down here

Mile marker 215

3. OK
I have been sick for five days now, not sure what is wrong, but just really sick.

I haven't been able to find a job, despite applying at ten or fifteen places.

And this morning, when I went outside, I find that my grille is broken. Someone apparently hit my car quite hard and just drove off.

Now I gotta drive to class with a killer headache, but not before I duct tape my grille back on and change my headlight.

Not kidding.

5. "We Carry On" - Tim McGraw
He hasn't seen a drop of rain for months it seems
Rollin' river is nothing but a trickling stream
The crops are dying in the harsh sunlight
The dust on his tongue is dry
The fatted calf is down to skin and bones
We carry on

Alone in the city and she's only seventeen
The boy left her black and blue in the street so mean
Just twelve weeks along and she's got a life inside
Says she's never ever felt so alone
She walks in the shelter, they say "welcome home"

And we carry on
When our lives come undone
We carry on
Cause there's promise in the morning sun
We carry on
As the dark surrenders to the dawn
We were born to overcome
We carry on

Beyond the picket fences and the oil wells
The happy endings and the fairy tales
Is the reality of shattered lives and broken dreams
We carry on

It's the family that grieves for a lost loved one
It's the soldier who won't leave til the job is done
It's the addict trying to turn his life around
It's picking yourself off the ground when you've been knocked down

And we carry on
When our lives come undone
We carry on
Cause there's promise in the morning sun
We carry on
As the dark surrenders to the dawn
We were born to overcome

We carry on
When our lives come undone
We carry on
Cause there's promise in the morning sun
We carry on
As the dark surrenders to the dawn
We were born to overcome
We carry on

He stands in the field, cooled by the winds of change
She smiles as her baby moves and it starts to rain

8. "Watermelon Crawl" - Tracy Byrd
I was driving thru Georgia in late July
On a day hot enough to make the Devil sigh
I saw a homemade sign written in red
Rind County Watermelon Festival Ahead
Well, I wasn't in a hurry so I slowed down
Took a two lane road to a one horse town
There was a party going on when I got there
I heard a welcome speech from a small town mayor

He said we got a hundred gallons of sweet red wine
Made from the biggest watermelons on the vine
Help yourself to some but obey the law
If you drink don't drive do the watermelon crawl

When the band started playing the watermelon queen said
Let me show you something that you ain't never seen
She grabbed me by the arm said come on let's go
She dipped down spun around and doe-see-doed
She rocked back on her heels dropped down to her knees
Crawled across the floor then she jumped back on her feet
She wiggled and she giggled beat all you ever saw
Said this is how you do the watermelon crawl

She said we got a hundred gallons of sweet red wine
Made from the biggest watermelons on the vine
Help yourself to some but obey the law
If you drink don't drive do the watermelon crawl

Well if you're ever down in Georgia round about July
If you ain't in a hurry then you oughta stop by
I can guarantee that you're gonna have a ball
Learning how to do the watermelon crawl

Well we got a hundred gallons of sweet red wine
Made from the biggest watermelons on the vine
Help yourself to some but obey the law
If you drink don't drive do the watermelon crawl

Do the watermelon crawl
Have fun you all
Do the watermelon crawl

9. Nope, probably too old for you.
How old do you think I am? he said.
I said, well, I didn’t know.
He said, I turned 65 about 11 months ago.

I was sittin’ in miami pourin’ blended whiskey down
When this old gray black gentleman was cleanin’ up the lounge

There wasn’t anyone around ’cept this old man and me
The guy who ran the bar was watchin’ ironsides on tv
Uninvited, he sat down and opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine

Ever had a drink of watermelon wine? he asked
He told me all about it, though I didn’t answer back
Ain’t but three things in this world that’s worth a solitary dime,
But old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

He said, women think about they-selves, when menfolk ain’t around.
And friends are hard to find when they discover that you’re down.
He said, I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime;
Now it’s old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes;
God bless little children while they’re still too young to hate.
When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
’bout old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

I had to catch a plane up to atlanta that next day
As I left for my room I saw him pickin’ up my change
That night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summertime
Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

11. All right,
I need to take my car in to be fixed this morning, which necessitates borrowing my mom's car for a couple of days. However, she's got some big to-do this afternoon and I won't be able to get her car until four pm, which will cause me to miss an important meeting at work. I could just take the car in tomorrow, but that would increase the likelihood of needing my mom's car over the weekend, and though she only rarely ever drives, I'm still loathe to put her out that badly. The bus isn't really an option - public transportation in Cleveland is a mess, and getting a cab from the east 'burbs to downtown is cost-prohibitive, and plus there's just no finding a cab in the east 'burbs.

What country song fits my conundrum?

14. If You Can Get a Truck, You Can Still Make Cheyenne
"I Can Still Make Cheyenne" - George Strait

Her telephone rang 'bout a quarter to nine
She heard his voice on the other end of the line
She wondered what was wrong this time
She never knew what his calls might bring
With a cowboy like him it could be anything
And she always expected the worst in the back of her mind.

He said, "It's cold out here and I'm all alone,
I didn't make the short go again and I'm coming home.
I know I've been away too long.
I never got a chance to write or call
And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all
But I'll be home soon and honey is there something wrong?"

Chorus:
She said, "Don't bother comin' home.
By the time you get here I'll be long gone.
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man."
He said, "I'm sorry it's come down to this.
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss.
But it's alright baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne.
Gotta go now baby, if I hurry I can still make Cheyenne.

He left that phone danglin' off the hook
Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look
Then he just walked away
He aimed his truck toward that Wyoming line
With a little luck he could still get there in time
And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say.

16. I Gots a Hundred Rodeo Songs
"Rodeo" - Garth Brooks

His eyes are cold and restless
His wounds have almost healed
And she’d give half of texas
Just to change the way he feels
She knows his love’s in tulsa
And she knows he’s gonna go
Well, it ain’t no woman, flesh and blood
It’s that damned old rodeo.

(chorus)
Well, it’s bulls and blood
It’s dust and mud
It’s the roar of a sunday crowd
It’s the white in his knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He’ll win the next go ’round
It’s boots and chaps
It’s cowboy hats
It’s spurs and latigo
It’s the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo.

She does her best to hold him
When his love comes to call
But his need for it controls a man
And her back’s against the wall
And it’s so long girl, I’ll see you.
When it’s time for him to go
You know the woman wants her cowboy
Like he wants his rodeo

*chorus*
It’ll drive a cowboy crazy
It’ll drive the man insane
And he’ll sell off everything he owns
Just to pay to play her game
And a broken home and some broken bones
Is all he’ll have to show
For all the years that he spent chasin’
This dream they call rodeo.

*chorus*
Well, it’s bulls and blood
It’s dust and mud
It’s the roar of a sunday crowd
It’s the white in his knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He’ll win the next go ’round
It’s boots and chaps
It’s cowboy hats
It’s spurs and latigo
It’s the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo.
It’s the broncs and the blood
It’s the steers and the mud
And they call the thing rodeo

but there are red hairs in my bed.....Then there is that rule against sex threads.
That's one offensive cd that I'm referring to, even the title is flamebait, but"old blue" and "whiskey dick" are funny as hell and very true to the genre.

23. How About "Living In the Promise Land" -- Willie Nelson
The only things we're gonna despair about is jobs, women, and pickup trucks.

==========================================================

Give us your tired and weak
And we will make them strong
Bring us your foreign songs
And we will sing along
Leave us your broken dreams
We'll give them time to mend
There's still a lot of love
Livin' in the Promised Land
Livin' in the Promised Land
Our dreams are made of steel
The prayer of every man
Is to know how freedom feels
There is a winding road
Across the shifting sand
And room for everyone
Livin' in the Promised Land

So we came from a distant isle
Nameless woman, faithless child
Like a bad dream
Until there was no room at all
No place to run, and no place to fall
Give us your daily bread
We have no shoes to wear
No place to call our home
Only this cross to bare
We are the multitudes
Lend us a helping hand
Is there no love anymore
Livin' in the Promised Land

Livin' in the Promised Land
Our dreams are made of steel
The prayer of every man
Is to know how freedom feels
There is a winding road
Across the shifting sand
And room for everyone
Livin' in the Promised Land

And room for everyone
Livin' in the Promised Land
