My campus has gone insane....
They are cutting down the beautiful old trees down the way from my dorm!! One of them was my favorite tree. It's a sweet gum. When the J-lab was down in the basement of the old science building, we'd sit and watch the colors change to the most beautiful shades of orange and red you've ever seen. I'm so sad. Why are they cutting down such beautiful trees?! What is wrong with them!?

1. Why don't you ask them why they're doing it?

5. Oh, that is sad,
but those Sweet Gums are the biggest pain the ass ever. The "gum" balls can go right through your foot when they're dry, and don't EVER try to mow over them. Your lawnmower turns into a machine gun.

19. After years of sticking with the Pokes
it's a bit hard to let my hopes get too high! That said, GO COWBOYS!! They are looking quite awesome.

Try the OSU website, click on athletics. That should give you ticket prices.

We've had a full house for all home games so far which is incredible. The new south side of the stadium is wonderful.

24. Ok, here's some thoughts on the Cowboys:
Cowboys have a lot of stuff going for them. Even though they hadn't been to a bowl game for a long time, they loved the game. True Cowboy fans are very loyal. Also, we aren't mean to the other side. It's just a game and we know that. We're not like the Sooner fans who will let the air of your tires or steal your pistol Pete of your antenna just because they can't stand to see him.
Last year at the bowl game, you could see cowboy fans partying and having fun with the other side. Everything is in good fun.
I'm also proud of the cowboys because they are gentlemen. When was the last time you heard of a cowboy getting into serious trouble? They put their morals first, not their notoriety. They aren't cocky and I'm so proud to call them fellow Oklahomans.

11. They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.

I think part of the reason this sucks the most is because one of the guys I used to watch it with just died in August, and I'm still grieving. I just wanna go huddle in a corner where the dark room used to be and commune with his ghost. I used to sit under that tree...

I think what makes it worse is that I didn't get to go to his funeral. I found out about his death in September and it happened in August.

9. I hear you
I live in a piney woods region. My neighbors across the street both just massacred a bunch of their 90-foot-tall pines for no apparent reason. They've both left a few standing, but it looks like the natural equivalent of someone just having received a bad haircut.

They'll pay for this next summer. The shade from my beautiful canopy of pines kept my combined electric bill for three months' worth of air conditioning in East Texas to less than $100--not per month, $100 total for three months. It's about a 2,500-sq.-ft. house. Got it made in the shade.

20. They did that to my old high school this summer
Cut down about a dozen 80 year old trees so they could add about a dozen parking spaces. Unbelievably sad.

21. That's so sad
I wonder why. I consider trees to be like a very large garden, something to be nurtured and cultivated and cared for. They're so beautiful and they provide so much, shade and beauty, cleansing for the air, a home for creatures, a place to relax and lean your back.

If the colors were so vivid, it wouldn't seem that they were diseased. I hope it's not just some irresponsible whim.

I'm sorry and I really understand. There's something about trees and I have certain trees that are very special to me. They're like friends.

22. As someone with arboreal knowledge i can tell you
there are myriad reasons for taking down trees in areas where people are. basically, it could be they've become infected with disease (although I am unaware of any epidemic involving Liquidamber styraciflua) or it could be they've become hazard trees due to (and this is much more likely) poor pruning methods, perpetrated by dumb asses! Liquidambers are tough. Prized for their fab fall colour and ability to grow in shitty conditions. but they can be weak-wooded, have aggressive concrete-breaking roots, and if pruned improperly, do not compartmentalise well.

Ask someone in the grounds keeping department. There is probably a 'Save the Humans' reason behind it

And, they are a fire hazard. You wouldn't want the whole campus to burn down because of a bunch of damn trees. Would you?
