Is milk good or bad?
I saw Lewis Black on HBO last night. He posed the question to the audience. They didn't know. I don't. Thought it would get kicked around nicely here.

6. It is yummy, and it's one major way I get protein.
I don't eat a lot of meat, so when I drink milk I feel an immediate jolt of well-being because I am putting much-needed protein in my body. I crave milk. I drink about a gallon a week. Skim only of course.

11. Uh, there isn't that much protein in milk, unless you drinking condensed
milk. One cup only has about 8 grams of protein. A cup of navy beans has almost twice that. An egg has about 6-7. An ounce of almonds has almost as much as a cup of milk.

Of course, milk is a great source of calcium which women need.

12. Yes but when you ingest less than a 1/4 of the amt of protein
you're supposed to, milk has way more protein than most other things I eat.

And your condescending tone is unnnecessary, thank you.

I'm sorry if you interpreted it that way.

21. I'm sorry if I overreacted.
It was the "uh" in the beginning of the post that did it. Sometimes stuff doesn't come across in writing the way it sounds when you say it, you know?

Peace. :hi:

From what I understand
Humans are not meant to drink cow's milk. Which is why so many people are lactose intolerant. I don't really know a lot about it, but it seems that I've read that while it's good for kids to a certain point, it's not so great for adults. Except for the calcium but I seem to recall reading that the pasteurization process does somehting to the calcium which makes it harder to absorb anyway.

Interesting question - I don't like milk and haven't drank it in many years.

20. Humans aren't meant to drink cow's milk?
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 12:11 PM by Pithlet
And the reason is because some people are lactose intolerant? There are few foods that no one is allergic to. Nuts, eggs, wheat, were we not meant to eat any of those things as well? Lots of people can't eat those foods, many with even more disastrous results than people who are lactose intolerant. I don't understand the "humans aren't meant to" argument. Not meant to according to whom?

The only argument against cow's milk with any merit is infants, and that is because they need mother's milk, or formula if they have no access to breast milk. Young babies shouldn't drink cow's milk because they could develop allergies.

28. Hey, don't holler at me!
I just seem to remember reading somewhere that cow's milk was not really suitable for human consumption - something about the digestive qualities or whatever. It was saying that the reason so many people are lactose intolerant is because cow's milk isn't easily digestible - or something. I don't remember the details.

If you read my post, you will see that I qualified it - I don't really know much about the subject - I just recall reading that somewhere and thought I'd toss it out in case someone else knew more.

Don't have a cow, man!!! :hi:

8. Some French scientists did a study some years ago
with mice. They fed some of them milk and the others cheese. The ones that were fed milk got clogged arteries. The ones that ate the cheese had clear ones. I found that very interesting.

9. I hope they got
some of that great Boucheron cheese. But that's from a goat.

Black's point was that as much as many of these things have been studied, we don't know.

13. If you drink milk,
...buy organic, if you can. Lots of hormones in milk. Here in MN you can buy non-hormone non-organic milk, but I like to buy the non-homogenized hormone-free organic milk from the dairy farm across the river. In glass bottles! With cream on the top! It tastes AWESOME and isn't much more than regular milk.

Non-homogenized (not unpasteurized) is supposed to be better for you because the fat globules are an irregular size and don't bond together as easily in your bloodstream.

Also, with homogenized milk, it's easier to mix leftover old and fresh new milk together before it's bottled.

15. Organic Whole Milk Is My Pref
But it's becoming harder and harder to find. I grew up on whole milk and anything else (skim, 2% what-have-you) just tastes like crap to me.

Unfortunately (for me, anyway), now that the organic market is exploding, the product that's been easily available for over 10 years is being squeezed off the shelves to accomodate the newly-converted two-percenters.

19. I drink it
I don't think it is necessarily good for you though. Many people are lactose intolerant for a reason. After the age of 2 our body produces less lactase and we are unable to break the lactose down. Then the lactose sits around inside of us and ferments. MMMMMMMMMM......smelley.
Sure it contains things are body might need, but there are many other ways to get them. We westerners are unhealthy anyway, so ingesting junk is normal...plus it all tastes good.

I actually just think milk is yucky. It's always grossed me out. It's not good for you if you have digestive problems. But I'm glad it's around to make cheese and ice cream!

24. It works for me.
Skim milk, preferably; 1/2 % when I'm feeling racy. My ancestors lived off their cattle for thousands of years, so I don't have lactose intolerance.

The cow's stuff can be a good, cheap source of protein (try to avoid the stuff with all the added hormones and antibiotics if you can), but it still upsets my tummy. :(

29. I would like it, if I wasn't
lactose intolerant. If I drink dairy milk, it's a good idea for everyone to clear the room I'm in for about two hours. I drink soy milk, which is pretty good stuff, but mighty expensive.
