Why Does Everyone Pronounce Brett Favre's Last Name As "FARV"...?
when it's not spelled that way? In real life, the V comes before the R... therefore it should be "FAV-ER" or "FAV-REE" or "FAV-RAY".

4. I love you Allen. The V was supposed to be silent. For that matter
why does everyone pick on Favre's last name and not Robert Porcher of the Lions who pronounces his name Por-shay instead of Porch-er like a front porch.

I hate it when people can't even pronounce their own names! I used to go to school with a family named Renaud and they pronounced it "Renard". Even as a kid, that seemed strange.....

about the subject, his family is from south-Mississippi, south-Louisiana area where the Cajun French settled and their pronunciations remain faithful.

The family even has a Cajun cookbook

which is how it's pronounced in England. British English is the all-time champion for inscrutable pronunciation...Worcester (Wooster), Leicester (Lester), Featherstone (Fanshaw), Cholmondeley (Chumly), Beauchamp (Beecham), etc...

14. French names are not always
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 11:07 AM by calico1
pronounced the way they are spelled like the way English often are. I had a boss who's last name was Lefebvre which he pronounced "le-fave." A lot of people would pronounce it "le-fever" which is incorrect. I work with a guy who is from Quebec originally. His last name is "Lallier" which is pronounced "La-li-ay" but everyone says it exactly the way its spelled, pronouncing the "r." He once told me I was the first person to say his name right.

24. Well...
>> I had a boss who's last name was Lefebvre which he pronounced "le-fave." <<

That makes more sense that "FARV". In your boss's case, even though the "b" is silent and the "r" is silent and the "e" is pronounced like a long-"a"... at least your boss didn't reverse two consonants and pronounce them out of order. (LeFarv)

Thanks for the explanation, though... it makes more sense than most I've heard.

37. I have heard the different "Mueller"
pronunciations too. I have heard "Muller" and "Mule-er." Also on one TV channel there is a weather guy named Sean who pronounced it "Seen" which I had never heard before. And there is a guy at work who's name is Begin which he pronounces Bee-gun. I have also heard it pronounced "Bay-gun." I'm sure there are a lot of others. Names are confusing! LOL.

27. Harry Caray once had quite a bit of trouble with the a player name
Mike LaValliere once a catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Caray pronounced it LA-VA-lear over and over. Steve Stone was doing everything he could to get the message to Harry that it was pronounced La-VALL-yer

It went something like this:

Caray: LA-VA-lear comes to bat in the top of the second ....LA-VA-lear is hitting .213...

Stone:Well Harry La-VALL-yer is a steady presence behind the plate for the Pirates...

Caray:Yeah I like LA-VA-lear we could use a guy like that...

Fast forward 3 innings

Caray:With two out in the top of the fifth Pittsburgh catcher Mike LA-VA-lear comes to the plate....

20. Because he's the GREATEST QB EVER!!!!!!!!
Because of his HEART!!!!!! And his THUMB!!!!!!! If he throws a pass and no one catches it, it's because the receiver's HEART wasn't as big as FAVRE'S!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes he throws passes TOO HARD, because he's just so GREAT, and how can he NOT, seeing as his HEART!!!! IS SO!!! BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

31. yeah, he's such a phoney
i remember one time against the Bears he took a hit and was on the field puking his guts out, they took him out for one play, he comes back in a fires a TD, perfect throw

this year he suffered a concussion, they took him out, he put himself back in and throws a TD on 4th down

last year he plays the game of his life on Mon night, 2 days after his dad died unexpectadly, his teammates playing like demons for him. One of his receivers catches a TD, comes and gives him big hug and says "I love you, man"

He's so, like, fake

26. I Think It's Actually a Different "R"
so to speak.

The "r" in "Favre" isn't really pronounced. It's deemphazised to the point where there's almost nothing there, like "quatre."

On the other hand, the "a" is pronounce like "ma." -- there's kind of an "h" sound that creeps in before the "v" -- something like "Fahhhhv."

That "h" sound seems to have become an "r" -- don't know if that's Cajun pronunciation, whether it's influenced by the "r" later in the word, or it's just the idiosyncracy of the Favre family.

I've been saying this all along. It should be pronounced FAWV. The R would be silent. But, even FAWvruh would make more sense than FAWver. The V is before the R!

My name is Dawn. Just because I suddenly start pronouncing it Newad doesn't mean it's the right pronunciation for that word. It would be silly.
