Why Does Everyone Pronounce Brett Favre's Last Name As "FARV"...?

pronounced the way they are spelled like the way English often are. I had a boss who's last name was Lefebvre which he pronounced "le-fave." A lot of people would pronounce it "le-fever" which is incorrect. I work with a guy who is from Quebec originally. His last name is "Lallier" which is pronounced "La-li-ay" but everyone says it exactly the way its spelled, pronouncing the "r." He once told me I was the first person to say his name right.

That makes more sense that "FARV". In your boss's case, even though the "b" is silent and the "r" is silent and the "e" is pronounced like a long-"a"... at least your boss didn't reverse two consonants and pronounce them out of order. (LeFarv)

pronunciations too. I have heard "Muller" and "Mule-er." Also on one TV channel there is a weather guy named Sean who pronounced it "Seen" which I had never heard before. And there is a guy at work who's name is Begin which he pronounces Bee-gun. I have also heard it pronounced "Bay-gun." I'm sure there are a lot of others. Names are confusing! LOL.

Caray pronounced it LA-VA-lear over and over. Steve Stone was doing everything he could to get the message to Harry that it was pronounced La-VALL-yer

The "r" in "Favre" isn't really pronounced. It's deemphazised to the point where there's almost nothing there, like "quatre."

On the other hand, the "a" is pronounce like "ma." -- there's kind of an "h" sound that creeps in before the "v" -- something like "Fahhhhv."

That "h" sound seems to have become an "r" -- don't know if that's Cajun pronunciation, whether it's influenced by the "r" later in the word, or it's just the idiosyncracy of the Favre family.
