I adore my kitten...we have renamed Little B--her new name is Lucky.

Here's her photo. Isn't she the cutest baby in the world?

She's curled up on the arm of the couch right beside me right now. I can't recall my dog, as a puppy, wanting to be so close to me all of the time.

11. Precious!
Is she a shelter baby? There's an animal shelter/adoption center in Houston where you can just walk in to the "cat room" or the "dog room" unescorted. I go now and then just to get my "kitten fix". I love my 3 cats, but 3 is enough!

BTW, I love dogs too, but when I go to this shelter, I remember one of the reasons I switched to cats. DOGS ARE NOISY!

Her mother was a pregnant stray that my brother took in. After she had the kittens--she had only two--I adopted this one and my son's best friend adopted the other, and then my brother had the mom spayed, and she happily resides with him.

is every bit as sweet and cuddly as she is, that I actually don't mind. I agree, though, that all kittens are adorable. I have never been a cat lover--this is the first cat I have ever had in my home--but I am converted now. :-) I am still a dog lover, too, though. :-)

17. She's an adorable little calico.....We had a calico called Ginger
who lived to be twenty years old...My daughter has one who's 15....Expect your kitty to be very feisty!....Calicos are always female, as you probably know!....My Ginger used to sneak up on me and slap me on the leg when I had a cast on my leg and she didn't like me sitting around all the time....It was quite funny!

21. That's funny!
Lucky has climbed my leg a couple of times--when I was wearing shorts! I had to strongly admonish her over that. And she loves to get on the back of the couch and wind her paws up in my hair. She makes biscuits on the back of my head when she does that. And, she nurses on my schnauzer, and my schnauzer has never had pups...It's the funniest thing. I think Lucinda actually considers Lucky her baby--someone said that it was possible that Lucinda might start lactating.

18. I love their feet.
I've raised two kittens, the rest of the cats I've had have come in half-grown or adult, off the street or from shelters. I volunteer at a shelter, though, and get to see kittens all summer -- I just love their feet. Not even sure why. The funniest ones are polydactyl cats -- the ones with extra toes. They look like they're wearing oven mitts.

I have two torties in the crew, here (both came in off the streets and never left). I don't know if it's just perception, but they seem distinctly different in personality from regular tabbies or parti-colored cats. It may just be perception -- I can't think of a reason, except that the overwhelming majority of them are female, that there'd be any difference due to color. Still, they seem more unpredictable.

29. 'Tortie' is short for tortoiseshell.
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 02:53 PM by nownow
They're red-black cats with little or no white. Apparently, the British call all red and black cats tortoiseshells whether they have any white on them or not. It's the color pattern. Doodle is a tortoiseshell-colored cat:

Some American 'cat people' say that any cat that has any white on it is a calico, and any cat that's red and black with no white is a tortoiseshell, but Doodle's fur actually looks like the tortiseshell combs and mirror backings they used to use, instead of having clearly-defined patches of ginger and black fur. I tend to call any cat that's mixed like she is a tortie.

Edit -- I'd call Lucky a calico -- she's more patches than mixed.

37. torties can be any color combo and it refers to the patchy, oil
on water type patterns on them. I have a brown and black tortie. Torties are always female except ther can be sterile males who are torties. But they are very rare.

I would call the cat pictured as a tortie with a possibly calico underside except I can't see the total underside. A calico has to have 3 distinct colors. I had a tortie with a calico underside once and the vets said she was very rare...something with the chromosomes for that combination. I found her as a stray and she was the best cat. To me torties are very special and unusual cats, like the cat's cat.

43. Doodle actually does have a couple of solid-color patches
on her belly -- she has a white stripe down the middle, and the edges are much more articulated than the rest of the color on her. I've seen a lot of variations -- and you're right, I've seen a lot of brown tabby cats with red patches at the shelter. In fact, we've had sort of a run on them in recent months. Midsummer, it was red/black ones; last fall, we had a bunch of dilute ones. We even had a dilute calico -- you don't see them very often. Much more often they're gray and buff tortoiseshells, mostly gray with a few spots on their faces and feet.

I've read that the Irish believe when a tortie voluntarily adopts you, it's good luck. Our 'rescues' both are torties -- one was living under my mother's shed, the other just showed up on the patio at a restaurant where we were eating one night. They're both nuts, but they're a lot of fun.

54. the torties are very demanding little girls aren't they?
They do seem to be nuttier too, don't they. The black and brown tortie I have now loves sitting on my lap and kneading my face with dilated eyes and she purrs so loud when she does this. My tortie's name is "Black" but often her name is "Badcat"

She likes to go up to my one male who is twice her size and kick him in his side while he is walking by. She completely jumps up in the air and gives him this flying kick with her back legs. She lands on her feet and runs away with him running after her. Or she likes to start chewing on the end of his tail if he's sitting on a chair and his tail is hanging over the edge. Tortie Fun.

42. I would call Lucky's sister a tortie, yes.
Her mother is what's called 'dilute,' by the way -- she's buff and gray instead of 'red' and black. As someone else noted, there are other colors -- we had a beautiful silver tortie-tabby at the shelter a couple of weeks ago, she was gorgeous. We also have a tortoiseshell in there who has a sort of smoke-colored undercoat. She looks like a regular tortie cat, but when you push her fur aside, she's light-colored underneath.

I've seen some really amazing-looking cats since I've been volunteering at that place. You don't really pay that much attention until you're looking at them regularly.
