saddest song ever?
bad diary days by pedro the lion

we barely ever fight
she knows that i love her
at first we made it every night
but i don't want to bug her about it
she just has a funny way
of loving me

pair of ticket stubs in the desk
a movie i've never seen
i probably shouldn't ask
it sounds so accusing
she must have forgot to mention
girl's night out

the breakfast cereal talked
more than we did all day long
i asked her for a walk
but she had to be on her way
so i told her that i knew
she'd been stepping out

she swore that she could explain
she swore that it would not happen again
she swore that she could explain
we both knew her words were in vain

it's even sadder when you hear it

10. Sand and Water- Beth Nielsen Chapman
All alone I didn't like the feeling
All alone I sat and cried
All alone I tried to find the meaning
In the middle of the pain I felt inside

All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water baby
Sand and water and a million years gone by

I will see you in the light of a thousand suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when I come as we all will come
Through the doors beyond the grave

All alone I heal this heart of sorrow
All alone I will raise this child
Flesh and bone he's just bursting toward tomorrow
And his laughter fills my world and wears your smile

I will see you in the light of a thousand suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when we come as we all must come
Through the doors beyond the grave

All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water baby
Sand and water and a million years gone by

13. By the Shores of the Swilly - Sinead O'Connor
By the shores of the Swilly, two children at play
The king of the castle, the queen of the may
Just me and my sister, in a world of pretend
Where the sun would keep shining, the day never end

By the shores of the Swilly, now with kids of our own
Another year over, and see how they've grown
Then we'd watch the last sunset, and walk arm in arm
Till I see you next summer; God keep you from harm
And if I was a flier who crashed now and then,
she would put me together and fly me again.

< Piano >

And if I was a flier who crashed now and then,
she would put me together and fly me again.
By the shores of the Swilly, with an aching inside
I'll watch as her body is raised from the tide...
Her life has been taken, and I'll never know why
but I feel in that moment, a part of me died...

It's about children who were kidnapped by the Reagan-backed "death squads" in South America during the 1980's.

Midnight, our sons and daughters
Were cut down and taken from us
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

In the wind we hear their laughter
In the rain we see their tears
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

Night hangs like a prisoner
Stretched over black and blue
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

In the trees our sons stand naked
Through the walls our daughters cry
See their tears in the rainfall

19. Alone and Foresaken
We met in the springtime when blossoms unfold
The pastures were green and the meadows were gold
Our love was in flower as summer grew on
Her love, like the leaves, now has withered and gone
The roses have faded, there’s frost at my door
The birds in the morning don’t sing anymore
The grass in the valley is starting to die
And out in the darkness the whippoorwills die

Alone and forsaken by fate and by man
Oh, Lord, if you hear me, please hold to my hand
Oh, please understand

Oh where has she gone to, oh, where can she be
She may have forsaken some other like me
She promised to honor, to love and obey
Each vow was a plaything that she threw away
The darkness is falling, the sky has turned gray
A hound in the distance is starting to bay
I wonder, I wonder, what she’s thinking of
Forsaken, forgotten, without any love

Alone and forsaken by fate and by man
Oh, Lord, if you hear me, please hold to my hand
Oh, please understand

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all the city lights

I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
I'm gonna kiss all the pretty girls
I'll do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

Oh I do a lotta things I know is wrong
Hope I'm forgiven before I'm gone
It'll take a lotta prayers to save my soul
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
Gonna kiss all the pretty girls
Who do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all your city lights
I'm gonna do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

28. Saddest CD and the saddest song EVAH!
Both by Amy Grant. The CD - Behind The Eyes. Written while she was married to Gary Chapman and in love with Vince Gill. This CD is heartwrenching. The song I chose still makes me sob everytime I hear it.

THE FEELING I HAD

I cannot take the heat
This girl’s going home
Standing on my own two feet
Standing alone

I’m just a little weary of
All the talk and all the buzz
And all I ever wanted was
The feeling I had with us

I cannot take the heat
I guess I’m letting go
I’m tired of stitching up my dreams with
This thread of hope

I’m still a believer of
Twin hearts and timeless love
And all I ever wanted was
The feeling I had with us

All I ever wanted was
The feeling I had with us

The road of life is rugged
Any road you choose
And when I find the other side
I’ll look for you

But I cannot take the heat
And so I’ll say goodbye
A million things I never said
Didn’t even try

’cause words are cheap and sometimes cruel
And stuff you hear is seldom true
And all I ever wanted was
The feeling I had with you

Yeah, all I ever wanted was,
The feeling I had with you

*sniff*

Vince an Amy are happily married now! :)

29. "Patches" by Dickie Lee (1962)
Not to be confused with Clarence Carter's song of the same name ("Then one day a strong rain came and washed all the crops away....") - Wayne

* * * * *

Patches

Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town

We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say No, and my heart breaks inside

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place would just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you

Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She dosn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more

I hear a neighbor tellin my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down in that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right But I'll join you tonight
Patches I'm coming to you.

Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 09:39 AM by CO Liberal
I was using our home PC, and forgot to log back in as myself before I did. Here's another sad song by Dickie Lee - "Laurie". - Wayne

* * * * *

Laurie (Strange Things Happen)

Last night at the dance I met Laurie
So lovely and warm
An angle of a girl
Last night I fell in love with Laurie
Strange things happen in this world

As I walked her home she said it was her birthday
I pulled her close and said
Will I see you anymore
And suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very very cold

I kissed her goodnight at her door and started home
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back instead
I knocked at her door
And a man appeared
I told him why i'd come
And he said

"You're wrong son
You weren't with my daughter.
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way?
My Laurie left this world on her birthday
She died a year ago today."

A strage force drew me to the graveyard
I stood in the cold
I saw the shadows wave
And then I looked and saw my sweater
Lying there upon her grave

Strange things happen in this world

32. I had a Hungarian friend in college...
He told me the English translations of Gloomy Sunday don't begin to do justice to the words. I tried to get him to tell me what the words really meant, and he said that the lyrics were about how the world was being destroyed by war, then he lapsed Hungarian and soon after passed out. I never found out what the rest of the words meant.

35. Seasons in the Sun: jacks/brel
SEASONS IN THE SUN

sung by: Terry Jacks

written by Rod Mckuen and Jacques Brel

Goodbye Emil, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we were nine or ten.

Together we climbed hills and trees.
Learned of love and ABC's.
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye Emil, it's hard to die.
When all the bird's are singing in the sky.
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
I wish we could both be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills we could climb were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye Papa, please pray for me.
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to show me right from wrong.
But too much wine and too much song.
Wonder how I got along.
Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die.
When all the bird's are singing in the sky.
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little kids are everywhere.
Think of me and I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song like the seasons have all gone.

Goodbye Françoise, my trusted wife.
Without you I'd had a lonely life.
You cheated lots of times with them.
But I forgave you in the end.
Though your lover was my friend.
Goodbye Françoise, it's hard to die.
When all the birds are singing in the sky.
Now that the spring is in the air.
With your lovers everywhere.
Just be careful, I'll be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach.

Goodbye Michelle, my little one. Y
ou gave me joy and helped me find the sun.
And every time when I was down.
You would always come around.
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die when all the bird are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach.

39. Love will tear us apart, Joy Division...
When routine bites hard
And ambitions are low.
And resentment rides high
But emotions won't grow.
And we're changing our ways
Taking different roads.

Then love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Why is the bedroom so cold
Turned away on your side?
Is my timing that flawed
Every feeling run so dry?
Yet there's still this appeal
that we've kept through our lives.

And love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Do you cry out in your sleep,
All my failings expose?
Gets a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold.
Why is it something so good
Just can't function no more?

And Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again...

Hello, goodbye from Germany,
Dirk

"Hey You" by Pink Floyd, actually every song on the album 'The Wall'. Hell, every song by Pink Floyd. All their songs delve into the dark side.

45. I think country does sad songs best
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 03:27 PM by MotorCityMan
The song by Reba McEntire, "For My Broken Heart", is in my opinion, one of the best songs about grief that I have heard. It has been very relevant to my situation since my lover died last Christmas;

Last night I prayed the Lord my soul to keep
Then I cried myself to sleep
So sure life couldn't go on without you

Lord, the sun is blinding me
As it wakes me from the dark
I guess the world didn't stop for my broken heart

Vince Gill is another who has a great voice for sad songs. "Never Knew Lonely", "Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name", and "Trying to Get Over You" all can have me sobbing.

Of course, the reigning queen will ALWAYS be Patsy Cline. I've always liked her uptempo songs (and always thought her version of "You Made Me Love You" is incredibly sexy) but she can break your heart on sad songs, "Sweet Dreams" being one of my all-time favorites.

47. " A Friend Is Dying" Cashman and West 1972
The LP "A Song or Two"

I think of her and I think of life's own music
At least that's the way it used to be
I think of her and I see children laughing
But it's only on the streets of my memory.

And I never felt so lonely and so helpless
Wishin' that I didn't know the truth
But they tell me that a friend is dyin'
And there's nothin' in this world that I can do.

Boy! I am so sorry! What a downer! I don't know what I was thinking!

49. Senor Don Gato
The poor kitty who, while dancing with joy on his roof over the love of his life, fell to his death. Poor Don Gato!

50. "End of the Rainbow" by Richard Thompson
I feel for you, you little horror
Safe at your mother’s breast
No lucky break for you around the corner
‘Cos your father is a bully
And he thinks that you’re a pest
And your sister, she’s no better than a whore

Life seems so rosy in the cradle
but I’ll be a friend, I’ll tell you what’s in store
There’s nothing at the end of the rainbow
There’s nothing to grow up for anymore

Tycoons and barrow boys will rob you
And throw you on the side
And all because they love themselves sincerely
And the man holds a bread-knife
Up to your throat, is four feet wide
And he’s anxious just to show you what it’s for

Your mother works so hard to make you happy
But take a look outside the nursery door
There’s nothing at the end of the rainbow
There’s nothing to grow up for anymore

All the sad and empty faces
That pass you on the street
All running in their sleep, all in a dream
Every loving handshake
Is just another man to beat
How your heart aches just to cut him to the core

Life seems so rosy in the cradle
but I’ll be a friend, I’ll tell you what’s in store
There’s nothing at the end of the rainbow
There’s nothing to grow up for anymore

It's not his only song somewhat lacking in cheer.

51. "This song is about living in Pasadena & commuting to Beaumont"...
...the introduction Townes van Zandt used for several of his darker songs. That is--really dark... (Gulf Coast residents can understand the horror of which he speaks.)

Townes' demons won; Richard has kept his at bay. Both these songwriters had a sense of humor, as well as an understanding of the darker side of life.

Except for their first album(Chicago Transit Authority), I absolutely loathe Chicago. But I have to give 'em credit for "Color My World". B-)

I think maybe it's I Grieve by Peter Gabriel.

Still not sure...

On second thought... I think it might be Mercy Street.

55. Is That All There Is?
Peggy Lee

". . . I know what you must be saying to yourselves.
If that's the way she feels about it why doesn't she just end it all?
Oh, no. Not me. I'm in no hurry for that final disappointment.
For I know just as well as I'm standing here talking to you,
when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my lst breath, I'll be saying to myself,

Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is"

Yes, that's another one. So for me it's a three way tie now.

I like PJ Harvey's version better, though. Isn't that strange?

62. Another Torch Song
Lush Life

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those "come what may" places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails

The girls I knew had sad and sullen grey faces
With distant gay traces
That used to be there you could see where they'd been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o'clock tails

Then you came along with your siren song
To tempt me to madness
I thought for awhile that your poignant smile
Was filled with the sadness
Of a great love for me

Oh yes, I was wrong
Again, I was wrong

Now life is lonely again
And only last year everything seemed so sure
Now life is awful again
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore

A week in Paris could ease the bite of it
All I ask is to smile in spite of it

I'll forget you I will
While yet you are still burning inside my brain
Romance is mush, stifling those who strive
So I'll live a lush life in some small dive
And there I'll be
While I rot
With the rest of
Those whose lives are lonely too...

59. Seeds and Stems
Sittin' alone, Saturday night
Watchin' the late late show
A bottle of wine, some cigarettes
Got no place to go
Well I saw your other man today
Wearin' my brand new Shoes
And I'm down to Seeds and Stems again too

Now that is a sad song. Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Seriously, Tears in Heaven by Clapton gets me every time.

60. "25" ~ Will Oldham
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 10:57 AM by mahayasmellbad
In the night of tiredness let me fall asleep without fighting,
Trusting you and trusting me too.
Let me be prepared by not fighting what I cannot fight,
Trusting you and trusting me too.

That I want you and only you,
Let my heart say this over and over.
All other desires that distract me
Day and night are false and empty to the core

You'll help me close my eyes at night
And things will all be good and finer in the morning.

From dawn to dusk I sit here before my door
And I know that all of a sudden
The time will come when I'll see you
And all my dark desires I denied or I gave into
Will become part of the thing I give to you.

61. Ruby (Don't take your love to town)
The First Edition.

You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair,
Ruby, are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadows on the wall tell me the sun is going down,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

It wasn't me that started that old crazy Asian war,
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore,
And yes, it's true that I'm not the man I used to be,
Oh Ruby, I still need some company.

It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed,
And the wants and needs of a woman your age, Ruby, I realize,
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until I'm not around,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

She's leaving now 'cause I just heard the slamming of the door,
The way I know I heard it slam one hundred times before,
And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground,
Oh Ruby, please don't take your love to town.

Oh Ruby, for God's sake, turn around

63. Here's one that springs to mind
Are you Lonely, by All About Eve

Do you feel so small
On sunday afternoon
In your loveless house
Full of empty rooms
Once a place of life
Once upon a time
Flames are dying out
While ghosts move in
Crossing on the stair
Asleep in empty chairs
Tell me... are you lonely ?

And if we believe wisdom comes with years
As knowledge stings our eyes
The easier the tears
Cradled in the sadness, a heart that ever aches
I'm praying with all mine
I won't make the same mistakes
Are the dark seeds there
In the blood we share
Tell me... are you lonely ?

While love lives, while suns set
While snowmoons rise in november skies
While ties bind while souls cry
While oceans ride in an endless tide
While love grows, while blood flows
While truth is real you need never feel alone

What seems to hurt the most
Is giving up the ghost
So tell me... are you lonely ?

Even sadder is you listen to the music.

Rebecca
