We are in grave danger of losing Hawaii to Bush!!!!!!
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 05:34 PM by plastic_turkeys
Or so says some poll....so I think a call to action is needed and all available DUers converge on Honolulu to part...canvass, yeah, that's it, canvass!

P.S. This thread was moved from GD2004 to the lounge, lest some loungers think I am cracking up! It was a call to action in response from some very worried posters about one Hawaii poll that said the race was a dead heat so you know the original context.

We can spend our time scouting babes of all descriptions to wear Kerry buttons. Where they'll put them, I dunno. :)

Actually it was my lame attempt at injecting a little humor into the proceedings. I could use a week in Hawaii AFTER the election.

18. You beat me to it.
Seriously, I am very shocked by this. Bush only pulled 37.5% here in 2000. The newspaper is the Honolulu Advertiser, and it is solidly Democrat. It has endored Kerry, & the Democrats for Senate & Representative. I don't know the part of the lower ticket endorsements.

Here is the link to the endorsements:

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Oct/22/op/op01p.html

Here is the link to the poll story:

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Oct/23/ln/ln05p.html

They are in a dead heat at 43.3% for Bush and 42.6% for Kerry, MOE of 4%, end date of poll was Oct 18, 600 likely voters.

The implications of this are serious. Neither side has been spending much money on HI, & everybody has assumed it to be a strong blue state. If they are a white state, then Kerry could be in trouble nationally.

That's one hot babe in the pic. Great place Hawaii. I've been there. But then again, I have been in every state except Alaska. Great babes in all of them.

Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 05:00 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
The sample includes 41% Republicans and 32% Democrats...

We know from 00 exit polls that Hawaii has 51% Democrats and 19% Republicans...

That's a 51% shift in party i d....

It is not credible...

20. Nice try
Sounds to me like some Kerry campaign staff want an excuse for R&R. Lord knows they won't be going there AFTER November 3rd with all the work they'll have to do.

Or is Kerry anxious to get some surfing in?

28. Being the skeptic that I am
I see this possible scenerio for the Republicans. Wouldn't it be great if Kerry bit on this and took one day of campaigning out to shore up Hawaii? On top of his a double bonus, jet lag the day after.

I'll believe it when I see it.

31. Said it yesterday say it again today-NO WAY
I spent the first two weeks of sept in both Oahu & Kauai, I brought stickers and buttons and wore my political shirts so I talked to many many locals on both Islands. I didn't talk to one local that was a Bushie. Yes, I met some in the resorts but they were from Orange County CA, Indiana, and places like that.

And this was BEFORE the debates where kerry did GREAT. So, I have no worries, I didn't see hardly any signs for Bush, but a lot for Kerry.

The military might get some votes but a lot of them might be voting out of state like my son-n-law who is in Air Force in Honolulu. They are still registered in Texas where they were. Voting for Kerry of course. My daughter says most on base are Bushies but not locals she works with downtown. Her boss ex military hates Bush and is for Kerry.

Also don't forget most of those expensive houses are vacation homes used by the rich for a few weeks a year so they are registered in the main land.

36. I live in Hawaii
Has there been an uptick in Republican activity? Yes.

In 2000, Hawaii had THE lowest turnout out of any state in the nation. Why? Because everyone just assumed that Gore would win Hawaii - which he did by an overwhelming margin.

In 2002, Linda Lingle, a Republican was elected as our first Republican Governor since statehood. Does it mean that Republicans have a foothold here? Hell no. Unions rule this state and there is no way she can defeat them - especially since the Democrats control 37 of the 52 seats in the State House and 21 of the 25 seats in the State Senate.

The only reason she won was because the Democrats were suffering from large scandals and our Democratic nominee for governor entered the race late and was a poor campaigner.

Also, Mike Gabbard (A.K.A. Wingnut extroindinaire, BIG TIME anti-gay bigot) has stirred up the congregations of the conservative churches here. More people have registered as Republicans due to his running for the US House. He is up against Ed Case and will get creamed - but will not go down without a fight. He will demagogue gay marriage all the way till November 2nd.

If the Republicans win Hawaii, it will be a result of Democrats not coming out to the polls to vote. Why? Because they assumed Kerry was going to win Hawaii anyway.
