Any Hunter Thompson fans here?
I just read his piece in Rolling Stone about the coming election. As a longtime fan, the fact that he would publicly state he would vote for Nixon before Bush is stunning. This is like Vic Morrow's ghost saying he'd make another film with John Landis.

He once wrote, in the forward for an anthology, a line that has been a recurring mantra in my life, "I probably won't do it, and for all the wrong reasons..." Duke was talking about jumping off a skyscraper balcony and aiming for the fountain across the street. He was a close friend of John Lennon and Warren Zevon.

I think I'll have to get his new book.

PS, is the Fear/Loathing movie any good?

5. Actually, the fact that it is Gilliam is the reason I've avoided seeing it
For every 12 Monkeys or Fisher King there are three Baron Munchasens.

I'm afraid that, Python work notwithstanding, I've generally found TG's work irritatingly busy. LIke a hundred Sergio margin cartoons going on in the background of every single shot. I have never been able to make it thru "Brazil."

I wasn't sure which category of TG movie "F/LiLV" fell into, the ones I like and the ones that make me cringe.

Sorry, not slamming the guy if you like him. I know a lot of people who don't share my love for the Coens as well.

9. Alex Cox wrote the screenplay...

...Gilliam probably fucked it up. I still think it's a great filmic "romp", especially with a bong handy, but Cox should have directed.

edit: love that DU bile analogy. "It's funny 'cuz it's true."

2. The Good Doctor is barking mad.
That said, barking mad people often tell the unpleasant truths. They also show deep veins of genius. The Good Doctor is all that. And more.

I could not bring myself to believe that we would go through this election without his insights. Thankfully, we got 'em.

3. Fear and Loathing is awesome.
Very twisted, but one of my favorites of all time. The Rolling Stone article was great, and although I am not a longtime fan, I've read his stuff in RS over many years. Is it really a shock that he'd vote for Nixon? I suppose if you were back looking into the future it would be. Sadly, the Bush years have made Watergate seem like a girl scout picnic. Fantastic article, btw.

6. Yeah, it's a shock. Distill all of DU's bile at *, and then imagine if

that much ill will was all poured in one man. That was how much HTS hated Nixon.

And yeah, as he pointed out, Nixon would be too liberal for this cabal.

8. Thanks for the analogy.
Wow. Take all the bile at DU....Now I get the gist of how much HST REALLY hated Nixon. I think Bush may go down in history as one of the most hated men of all time. Let's boot him next Tuesday, so he the only damage he'll have left to do is taint the history books as an *. Soon forgotten. A joke. A bad dream.

BTW, See the movie! You won't regret it. Johnny Depp and Benecio del Torro are excellent.

4. Hunter should run for office, except...
He'd end up shooting his television.

Ooops, already did.

10. Another Longtime HST fan here....
Rolling Stone fell from hipness in music coverage back in the early 70's, but had a few saving graces. Their publication of the works of Hunter Thompson was one of them.

I'd been following Hunter's ESPN column for some time, noting a few choice political morsels in the sports coverage. The article in the latest Rolling Stone truly made me happy.

Please see the Fear & Loathing movie. It's excellent.

11. Yes, Hunter's article was truly satisfying.
Fear & Loathing was very well made (and Hunter himself was highly pleased with it). There are rumors he hinted at in Kingdom of Fear that Gilliam and Depp might come back to make a movie of The Rum Diary, which I am looking forward to greatly.

The Good Doctor is one of our psychotic national treasures, and anyone who hasn't read his Rolling Stone article needs to http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/_/id/6562575?pageid=rs.Home&pageregion=single7&rnd=1098381631874&has-player=true&version=6.0.11.780">get off their asses.
