It was in an indoor/outdoor type place...
...industrial type band opened up... Machines of Loving Grace...
Crowd ROWDY as hell....beer flowing plentifully... everybody drinking...and HYPED up...
...electricity in the air, that you can literally feel, like the hair stands up on the back of your neck when lighting is about to strike nearby....
Korn *mightily* hits the stage, with the famous "Arrrre yoooouuu reeeaaaddddyyyy!!!!".. (from the song "Blind", keep in mind this was their only album back then)
Place goes APE SHIT!!.. bodies flying everywhere... heads banging.. hair and sweat flying everywhere...
They get a little ways into the song "Blind"... and the POWER IS CUT OFF!! Everybody is like WTF?!?!.... tension in the air... full cups of beer start to get thrown, etc.. they start to play again..
madness resumes... Power cut off again almost instantly.. the get going quick again and it happens a third time RIGHT after the second time... by now... unrest....
... word comes that, because it's an indoor/outdoor place, there is some noise ordinance in Florida that is causing the problem...
Crowd starts chanting... "Florida Sucks!! Florida Sucks!!! over and over.... I literally watch a Miller Light bottle bounce off the bridge of some kid's nose who looks bewildered as his buddy then leads/drags him out of the pit.. Jon from Korn fuels the situation by stating over the mic: "You guys can riot if you want to!"
It almost happens.. I start taking a good inventory of my proximity to the various exits..
Finally the show resumes.. this time for good.... craziest pit I have ever seen.... with unfortunately many people hurt, none were that serious, but I know that the arm does not bend the way I saw one bent that night.... bloody nosed kid on a stretcher giving the 2 finger devil sign (:headbang:) and highfiving his friends.... crazy...
So people are stage-diving, right... but a LOT.. there is always at least 2 or 3 bodies in the air...crowd surfing, etc... skinheads not as high in numbers as usual, but doing their usual thing. (if you've ever been to a punk or metal show in the late 80'2, early to mid 90s, you'll know what I mean when I mention the skinheads.. but weren't much of a factor this particular night)
The arena is like a solid but tent-like structure with a peak in the middle.. the peak is supported by a 5 inch or so metal pole that goes all the way up the ceiling, which falls right in the middle of the pit...
.. so since it was in the pit.. they had wrapped some of that gymnastics mat stuff around the poll up to about top-of-head level a few times, for people to just bounce off of.. and that made the whole thing about 2 feet thick...
...but now there is a *ledge* you can stand on, up the pole, on top of the edge of the gym mat padding... and so people are climbing on that and jumping off...
Then one kid gets up there.. but then shimmies up the pole!!.. to about, no bullshit, 6 to 8 feet I'm guessing.. above the crowd's heads...
He then proceeds to put one foot against the poll, then lets go of the poll and kicks himself off the pole... he lands back down/belly up on about 3 or 4 unsuspecting people whom he just obliterates...
... there was mass commotion on the ground (keep in mind Korn is going ballistic playing onstage and the pit is raging) and my view was sort of blocked.. but it wasn't good.
...that was 2 more for the paramedics, one was the kid who did it.
The whole show there was shit flying in the air...cups, bottles... a barstool ends up in the pit... just crazy... and they never tried to stop it.. obviously because of the MUCH WORSE situation that would've caused (see also: full scale riot) I think they figured just keep the first aid coming and it'll be over soon enough. :dunce:
I am glad I went.. and I am glad I survived... I actually had a good time, I am just sorry that so many people got hurt...
Ever since then, after they got real famous, that show was always what I thought of when I thought of Korn... talk about electricity in the air and that adrenaline rush, like you're having fun, but you know some major shit could pop off at any moment so you're like hyper aware...
I wasn't familiar with Korn's material then (some chick I met in my computer class had invited me) but I did buy the CD shortly after...
Well, that's the Korn show...
:headbang:
