1. Free - as opposed to what? The people in other countries
we steadfastly oppress?

2. It isn't a bad song. It just isn't true anymore :(
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 02:29 PM by buckettgirl
on edit: I'm sorry that you can't appreciate that this song was written in better/different times. I don't know if you like country music or not, but that isn't a reason to bash the song either. The sad truth is that the song doesn't apply to America anymore :(

I was proud to be an American, when I used to be free.
I won't forget the men that died who tried to give that right to me.

4. What exactly does free mean?
Free to live in a country where no election is ever stolen?

Free to invade other countries?

Free to smoke pot?

Free to not worry about Roe v Wade being overturned?

What the hell does that mean, anyway?????

I'm sure ol' Lee doesn't get it.

7. Yup...
Free to travel if you buy a drivers license.

Ooops... And if you pay to license your car.

Free to own your home if you keep paying property tax.

Free to take the medication you want if you pay a doctor to write a government approved prescription.

Free to own a pet as long as you buy a license.

Free to take a walk downtown without ID, as long as you don't get asked for ID by the cops.

19. Remember some poor family at a baseball game got harrassed...
...and almost beaten up for refusing to STAND during that song when it was played during the seventh-inning stretch?
I wish I could give you a link...but it happened.
Crazy-ass country, no?

9. The lyrics will have to change soon, as Bush part II will trample our
rights.

They will then go "I am proud to be an American, where at least I am more free than in Saudi Arabia."

15. It's a wretched song & Lee Greenwood is a talent-free hack.
No “overnight success” story here. Lee--one of the most acclaimed artists internationally—and often identified as virtually the ultimate name that comes to mind when patriotism is mentioned in the entertainment industry--gained his success the old fashioned way: He earned it, one rung up the ladder at a time. After years of struggling to gain recognition in the music industry, one song—“God Bless The USA”— in 1983 singularly transported Lee Greenwood far beyond the ranks of stardom to a niche in America’s pop culture that is seemingly reserved for he and he alone.

www.leegreenwood.com/LGFSMain.php?page=home.php

The nausea-inducing bio goes on to recount his birth in Sacramento, California & his stunningly successful career. Apparently he turned down a music scholarship for a gig in Reno, then turned down a place in The Young Rascals for a gig in Vegas. A few years of success in Nashville were followed by years of obscurity until Gulf War I made his wretched tune a hit. His wonderful young family is also mentioned; the family he started at 17--that kept him out of the draft--is not mentioned at all.

21. 'he and he alone?' English teachers, that's wrong, right?
shouldn't it be 'him and him alone?'

anyway, he really DOES occupy a place of his own in the musical pantheon...but not the one the writer thinks it is...

16. Yep, thats pretty high on my least favorite list
and not because it's country. Simply because there is an implied assumption that we're all just good ole' boys here in the USA and if we could just go out pheasant huntin' together, followed by some beer drinkin' and then a little prayer meetin', everything would be OK.

Plus, anytime I hear 'God Bless the USA', I cringe. Just like when football players thank God for their victory or the way Bush thinks God chose him to be pResident. Ridiculous

22. I hate that song.
Just makes me want to find the guy who sings it and tell him he has 30 seconds to define "freedom" before I release the fire ants.

They will be singing it in the isolation cells of the holding camps. "At least I know I'm freeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" Because they're AMERICANS! So no matter how unfree America is, they're still free, because they're AMERICANS! So they KNOW they're FREE! No matter what the American government DOES to them! ARRRGH!!!

:argh:

23. I can't hear that song without thinking of a friend of mine who
died in the Gulf War. They played that song incessantly in 1991. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Tripe.
