1. Same thing happened to me the other day (I've WinXP Pro).
Try reinstalling the video driver or download a newer version and install it.

2. It May be a Software Problem
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 07:08 PM by rwenos
Usually, when you have 256 colors (as opposed to a completely black screen), you have a software problem.

Try reinstalling the driver for the graphics adapter. Assuming you're running a version of Windows, run the Hardware Wizard, put your Windows disk in your CD drive (or your graphics adapter disk, if your graphics adapter came with software), and reinstall.

Odds are you are running a VGA graphics adapter incorporated into your motherboard. Thus, your original Windows disk is the one to try first. Insert it into your CD/DVD drive. Then start the Hardware Wizard from the Control Panel.

In other words, try the easy, cheap solutions FIRST!

then VGA it had to be something like that.. so frustrating!

7. I had a video card do this to me
I could boot into Safe mode with VGA.

This worked for me until the video card died.

1) Boot safe mode.

2) right click select properties.

3) (Grr I am on my Apple so ) the select I think settings.

4) Change all settings to refect VGA mode.

5) Save settings.

OK now re-boot and go for full boot.

6) you should be up in normal mode just in VGA mode.

7) now reset the setting like you really want them

---- this worked for me for about a year before the video card died a hard death.

Hope it helps.
