The new Outkast album/Allman Bros Rerelease
Edited on Sun Sep-21-03 10:33 PM by YoungLiberal16
For those who aren't up on it the two M.C.s in Outkast decided to release solo albums. Instead of releasing them seperately and have them compete with one another they released them together as a double album (all for the low low price of $16.99) Andre's disc is The Love Below while Big Boi's is Speakerboxx. Big Boi's disc sounds like a modern hiphop album. It's good but nothing special. The Love Below is one of the best album I have heard this year. Andre has gone out on a limb and created something that is completely mindblowing. The first track is an introduction that sounds like an Irving Berlin pop tune straight into some laidback "Kind of Blue-esque" jazz with a Jimi Hendrix intro. The album covers every genre under sun (even baroque) and was mostly recorded with a live band. I don't think I can praise it high enough. Norah Jones does a really fucking cool guest appearance on a few songs as well.

Also out this Tuesday: The new Allmans DVD from the Beacon Theatre earlier this year. It's a 22 song setlist on 2 DVDs and they were ON the 2 nights it was recorded. It also helps to prove my point that Derek Trucks is the best young guitarist in the United States today. DEAR GOD his slide guitar makes me want to cry.

Last but certainly not least: Allman's DELUXE EDITION at Filmore East. Two cds with 13 tracks total. It combines all the songs from the original Filmore, Eat A Peach, Duane Allman Anthology and the Dreams box set (as well as unreleased songs) to create a cohesive Filmore setlist. It has fucking killer packaging too.

Also got this weekend: Ladies And Gentleman by the Rolling Stones DVD. Bootleg concert from 72 with god himself Mick Taylor. Amazing show

This is a good week for rock n roll music.

(It pays knowning friends who can get you albums early :-D)

1. I am digging the two Outkast singles on Rhapsody in a loop right now
They Way You Move, and Hey Ya!

The instrumentals are great too.

3. The Outcasts

are one of the few groups in rap who I still follow. Andre and Big Boi have always had innovative lyrics. I like they don't do the same old shit that everybody else does.

The Outcasts, The Roots, Blackstar, and some members of Wu-Tang (especially Inspectah Deck) still give me hope rap might pull out of this "cut and paste" bling-bling rut that it's in now.

As a 20 year fan of rap....I can still hope.

4. Thanks for the heads up on the Allman Bros.
I agree that Derek Trucks is one hot guitarist. Soon they will need to rename the band the Trucks Family Band (father Butch Trucks is one of the drummers) :-) BTW, their new studio album "Hittin the Note" is pretty fine as well. "Desdemona" is one of my favorites on it.
