Poll question: Most pathetic sports franchise in the big 3 sports?
Just to clarify on a few points:

- I'm not including the NHL because they're not playing this season, and well, it's my poll.

- I've left off teams like the Chicago Bulls, because while they are pathetic right now, they won 6 championships in the past 15 years. Ditto the 49ers, who are pretty awful, but have been a model franchise over the years.

- I'm not trying to offend fans of any of these teams. I know that Bears fans and Browns fans in particular are great fans. I'm commenting on the state of the franchises and the way they are being run.

Have fun, and I'll enjoy reading your reasons for the votes.

1. Chicago Cubs
They are now the team that has gone the longest without winning the world series. The owners know they can have a shitty team and still fill the stadium, which they refuse to repair.

9. I didn't include the Cubs
Because if I were making this list a year ago, I wouldn't have put the Red Sox on it either. Both are major market teams, and have been at least competitive as of late.

It's been so comical to see the Tribune company and Mayor Daley fight the last few years over the whole Wrigley Field issues. Only in Chicago, I guess.

2. I only follow baseball
So I can only vote for a baseball team.
The Montreal Expos were really bad but they played in Canada. I understant that caused exchange issues; paying players in US dollars was very expensive when they charge their fans in Canadian dollars. It was hard for them to get in a bidding war for players.
I felt sorry for them but I don't want to paint them as the most pathetic team ever.

The team that I think is really pathetic is the Chicago Cubs. They are long-time LOSERS! Also, they were cursed by some guy because the Cubs wouldn't let him bring his pet goat to a game. That is a really lame curse. At least the Red Sox could blame the great Bambino.

4. Los Angeles has something for everyone...
If you like basketball, you can watch the Lakers play.
If you hate basketball, you can watch the Clippers.

5. Clippers. No contest.
They will never be any good until Sterling gives up the team, and even then it may take many many years to repair. They should probably move the team somewhhere else, maybe Anaheim, and just start over.
Now as an avid Cubs fan, I do believe they are close. Will this be the year? I don't know, but if so, there is a looooonnnngggg period of celebration happening at this house. CUBS IN '05!

10. How could you possibly miss the Arizona Diamondbacks?
Now that the Big Unit is on his way to the House that Ruth Built, the D-backs will stand alone as the very sorriest franchise in all sports.

12. LA Fakers
Waste millions trying to put 4 "superstars" on one team in an attempt to buy an NBA championship, choke in the playoffs, and instantly disintegrate.

13. That would definitely be my Astros.......
.....they were THAT close this year. I could TASTE the peanuts and beer at the World Series. When Jeff Kent hit that bomb to put the 'Stros up 3 games to 2, you just knew that they couldn't blow it.....and then, you remembered that this was the Houston Astros that we were talking about here.

I love 'em, though. Through thick and thin. My first game was '82. Ryan vs. Steve Carlton. Carlton was actually closer to breaking Walter Johnson's strikeout record at that pint. Pete Rose was still playing for the Phillies. I was 18 and had just moved to H-Town from Texarkana. Good times. The '86 NLCS was a classic. The 1998 squad was a gem. This year was freakin' incredible.

But let's face it, they're pathetic. They'll never win the big one. Good grief, the Red Sox won a championship. The RED SOX........
