Upstairs/Downstairs--one of the best shows ever?
Rented the 20th anniversary show tape and it was great. Then we got the complete 4th season last night and watched a couple of episodes last night. What a grreat show. Any other fans?

2. I am. Love Upstairs Downstairs--loved most of the great 70s-80s
Masterpiece Theatre series on PBS, like Poldark, Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown...those were the days, weren't they? Sunday evenings were inviolable back then; whatever I might have been doing earlier in the day, I was home and planted in front of the tube by 8 p.m.

You really got my hopes up, you know. I thought maybe they were re-running the series as part of the current pledge drive...

3. Sorry to get your hopes up.
I don't thing they're re-running it. But I think the whole series is available on video.

4. Yep
I loved it.

The most memorable one for me was an early one - Emily falls in love with a footman from another house, is eventually rejected by him and kills herself.

Every time I see that one I bawl.

8. Just building up post count, then?
Or do you like to go around telling people what you haven't heard of? :P

6. Never seen it - but you intrigue me
I'll have to check it out sometime. Would I need to start from the beginning or is there a better season to watch?

7. You can pretty much start wherever.
But it's fun to start at the beginning and watch the characters develop.

10. I love that show! Do you know if there is a DVD set
available? All I have are my old tapes that I recorded off of PBS.

12. This was on the website listed above
Granada (which now owns most of ITV!) has signed a new deal with DVD company Network which gives them rights over 5 years to release many old TV shows from the archives. I am reliably informed that Network is definitely looking at UpDown for DVD re-release starting next year, as the rights for VCI to issue the series start to expire. Network are known for doing nice packages of DVDs, complete with "extras" such as commentaries, booklets, documentaries and so forth. We also hope that they can re-master the episodes afresh from whatever are the best surviving copies, rather than using LWT's "bread-and-butter" current archive masters which could be a bit better in most cases.

It has to be pointed out, though, that Network's announced plans (which include many fairly obscure TV shows) do sound very grandiose, and one would have thought the UK market for UpDown on DVD would already have been mostly satiated by VCI's disks... So let's not be too disappointed if it all comes to nought!

14. My top-ten list of best series ever (in no particular order):
Upstairs/Downstairs
I, Claudius
"V" (the original miniseries)
The Prisoner
The Simpsons
The Kingdom (Swedish/Danish mini-series)
The Newsroom
Family Guy
Profit (foolishly cancelled after only a few episodes)
Blackadder (Goes Forth)
