What Is Your Least Favorite Stretch of Highway?
If I said I-95 from Maine to Miami that would be a pretty large stretch of highway...but I am going to narrow it down a little bit...I 95 from Savannah GA to the FLA line...this might be the longest 100 miles I will ever travel in my life. Too many vehicles not enough highway...when I finally make it into S Carolina going north I feel like I need an Ativan...then finally I get to I-26 and can finally get off of that monstrous highway.

38. I was on that stretch last Thursday.
My son & I were trying to get to the 101 to do some sightseeing but decided to veer off onto 10 East. We were headed for Vegas anyway.

But we did at least get to hear about an hour of Steve Jones' radio show while we were stuck traffic.

72. Can't be worse than the 405 between SF Valley
and West LA, which is a parking lot pretty much 24/7. The most boring stretches of highway I have ever driven are I-40 across the Texas panhandle and OK and Alligator Alley across south FL. The nicest strech of road has to be the Pacific Coast Highway, especially in northern CA.

79. Do you guys not fill potholes anymore?
My memories of the 405 from the 80's was that it was crowded, but smooth, well-maintained and well-signed.

It's still well-signed, but feels like Pennsylvania after a muddy Spring - pothole heaven.

2. 95 is a zoo
At least the Va./NC/MD/Del/Pa parts I have driven

There is what I call the "95 move" which is cutting all the way over to the right lane (in 3 or 4 lanes of traffic) passing a block of cars and then swinging ALL the way back over to the far left lane and speeding up more. I know it isn't exclusive to 95 but you see it there way more than you see it anywhere else.

I81 is fine with me-yeah lots of trucks but they know how to drive-I have no problem with them.

"The I-95 A**HOLE Song".

A DJ I knew had it about 15-17 years ago, back during my drinking days.

Up here in Maine, 95 isn't too bad!

23. "The I-95 Asshole Song"
I used to get requests for this one all the time when I used to DJ in bars back in New Jersey:

* * * * *

The I-95 Asshole Song
(Recorded by Both Jimmy Buffett
and August Campbell and His Spur-of-the-Moment Band)

Well I was drivin’ down I-95 the other night.
Somebody nearly cut me right off the road.
I decided it wasn’t gonna do any good to get mad.
So I wrote a song about him instead.
It goes like this…

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
‘cause you’re an asshole tonight.

Yes you’re an A S S H O L E…
And don’t you try to blame it on me.
You deserve all the credit.
You’re an asshole tonight.

You were an asshole yesterday.
You’re an asshole tonight.
And I’ve got a feelin’
you’ll be an asshole the rest of your life.

And I was talkin’ to your mother
just the other night.
I told her I thought you were an asshole.
She said, “Yes. I think you’re right.”

And all your friends are assholes
‘cause you’ve known them your whole life.
And somebody told me
you’ve got an asshole for a wife.

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
‘cause you’re an aaaass…hole tonight.

and putting up tolls just for trucks-if memory serves.

As a guy I never really noticed how bad the rest areas were and when Gilmore started talking of "privatizing" them I immediately rejected the idea-Yeah they are bad and something really needs to be done.

4. Interstate 94 throughout the state of Wisconsin
It is invariably in varying stages of road construction. There should be a sign on both the Minnesota and Illinois borders that says "Bumpy roadway next 350 miles"

They also do this annoying thing with their construction projects. They completely close down one side of the highway, re-routing the traffic to the other side with nothing separating you from oncoming traffic but those stupid orange sticks.

Another annoying thing they do is re-route you to US highway 12 for 30-40 miles at a time, on which you must slow down to *25* mph through all the small towns encountered along the way - even the unincorporated ones.

It the old east to west route from in the days before Interstates.

It's about 3 or 4 miles south of, and runs parallel to, I-80. It's not a 4 lane highway, but when I need to sneak into Indiana it's very convenient for me.

52. It does go through Park Forest, but not Cal City.
There's an on ramp off of 57 in Matteson. It goes east through Park Forest and the Heights then into Schererville. If you go west it takes you to Frankfort and New Lenox and Joliet.

The ramp off of 394 is near Ford Heights.

It's the first transcontinental highway in the US. And when old Rt 1 (Dixie Hwy) was the considered the main N/S route to get the intersection of 30 & 1, located in Chicago Heights, was THE crossroads of the country. Now it's nondescript.

53. Sorry.
I didn't mean it went through Cal City. I meant the on ramp from 294 was a couple of miles north of Cal City. I think it shares the exit with I80.

I only lived in Chicagoland for 6 or so years as an adult, so my knowledge of all the old routes is sketchy at best. The reason I asked about Park Forest was I lived there as a kid. I remember the local big "mall" was located off Lincoln Highway.

...up 64 and out to 81 is the potential for bad weather during the winter. We got stuck in PA in February two years ago during that terrible storm. Luckily, we were at the Hershey Lodge, which is a convention site, so there was plenty of food.

I must have spent $200 in quarters entertaining those kids with video games. Moral...never go ANYWHERE without bathing suits for the kiddies.

Richmond to Williamsburg is the most relaxing stretch of road you will find anywhere. Granted nothing to look at except trees and a LONG stretch of no where should you break down but other than that

The News to Norfolk is bad but you have to realize the Peninsula is only 24 miles wide and 64 IS mainstreet there.

14. US Route 22 in Union, NJ
When the highway was first built, businesses sprang up on both sides of the road. So when they wanted to expand the highway back in the '40s or '50s, they built new eastbound lanes behind the existing businesses. Then more businesses sprang up along the new roadway. Asa a result, there are now businesses (stores, malls, restaurants, and car dealerships) on both sides of the divided highway AND IN THE MEDIAN!!!! You take your life into your own hands driving there.

95. Aint that the truth
The stretch from Route 287 in Bridgewater to Whitehouse Station is being turned into an elevated highway in a couple of years, and the existing stretch will become a service road. That's how bad it is. There's probably at least 7 office parks right off that stretch. And there's still daily accidents at the Felix 9 diner.

I've made that drive many times, and that stretch of road is horribly boring, and seems to be under construction most of the time to boot. The most interesting thing is seeing the small-town cathedral spires in the distance.

I don't mind it as much once it crosses into Colorado, because (a) I know I'm approaching the first glimpses of the Rockies, and (b) I am soooo glad to be out of Kansas. :)

36. I-5 through downtown Seattle
What kind of IDIOT plans a 2 lane (each direction) through the downtown of a large city, with virtually no room to expand it on the sides, and then builds a goddamn convention center on top of it, so even a "viaduct" type expansion is impossible.

Dishonorable mention - I-80 in any of the western "red" states it passes through. Narrow crappy road with more holes than an Iraqi mine field.

I agree the area around the old Kingdome was just a fucking nightmare.

The rest of I-5 isn't too bad, at least a few years ago when I live there.

45. I-25 Through Both Pueblo and Colorado Springs Can Be a Real Nightmare
The stretch through Pueblo was built back in the '50s and originally called the Pueblo Thruway. It was not built to Interstate standards, and they are currently redesigning it to make it safer. Right now, it features a sharp turn near Downtown Pueblo that is posted for a 55-MPH speed limit, and trucks regularly overturn on that curve.

I-25 in Colorado Springs has been under construction for the past few years. I was probably adequate when it was designed back in the '50s and Colroado Springs was a small city of 50,ooo people. It's totally inadequate now that there are 300,000 people in the area.

67. Pueblo is pretty bad
I drive through fairly frequently on my way to or from Fort Collins, and I always hate the road through Pueblo. It offers some interesting views of the town, but the road condition is horrible, the turns are bad, and I'm always surprised at how narrow it feels on that stretch of road.

The south part of CO Springs is bad, but the north side, while wider and easier to navigate is almost unbearable because it has that road sign announcing the Focus on the Family Visitor Center :puke:

69. They're Planning on Moving I-25 slightly to the East
Getting rid of that sharp turn near Exit 98 (referred to locally as "The Ilex" - though I don't know why). The new roadway will go between the Rocky Mountain Steel Mill and the existing roadway - the existing roadway will become an extension of Santa Fe Avenue improving local access from Downtown to the South Side.

God Bless EZPass

Now the Garden State isn't nearly as painful as it used to be, when you used to have to stock up on quarters and dimes before every damned trip.

I used to drive between Phila and Saddlebrook about twice a month for work. If you drive 65, you'll be flattened like a pancake. Several times I had to call and say "I'll be missing the meeting, I'm sitting on the NJTP going nowhere." Bad, bad memories.

Now my least favorite is the stretch of NJTP right by Ft. Lee leading to the Geo Washington Bridge - you have to sit in bridge trafic even if you're trying to exit to Ft. Lee.

56. Savannah to I-26 and you don't like I-95...
as I am from South Carolina, might I suggest US 321 as an alternative? I assume from your description that you are headed toward I-77.... US 321 is a scenic highway, two lanes, but not much traffic. There are several towns for which one must slow down, but it is worth it if I-95 is too stressful. The highway is actually a straight line (i.e. shorter distance) between Savannah and Columbia, and will put you right on to I-77 at the junction with I-26.

One interesting point about this highway: You must pass through Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden on this road. Yes, these are actual town names along the route. Denmark and Norway are the only ones you'll notice because if you blink, you'll miss the other two.

Counties to be careful in (from Charlotte to Savannah) because of the state troopers: (I-77) Chester, especially around Richburg, Fairfield, especially around exit 34 and then on (I-26) Orangeburg county as a whole.

with I-40 between Little Rock and Nashville a close second.

I firmly believe that Interstate 40 will never be completed in Arkansas, as I have traveled that road many times since 1989 and have run into construction every time!!!! How many times can you repair a bridge, anyway.

I30 between FW/D is a big ole commuter road and always congested during the week, not so bad on the weekend, or late at night.

62. Do I have to choose one?
My nominations:

I-84 through Hartford. So many twists and turns, and CT drivers drive fast. (I know -- I learned to drive there.)

I-90 through Massachusetts and NY (Mass Pike and the NY Thruway). Horrible traffic till you clear Sturbridge, then vast sums of nothingness all the way to Buffalo punctuated by exits every 15-20 miles.

I-94 from Madison-Milwaukee. Pothole central.

The Garden State Parkway. Who thought it was a good idea to have tolls every few miles? As I recall, there are roads around Chicago like that too.
