US flags mounted in dog droppings in city
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 07:18 AM by Kellanved
BAYREUTH - Baffled authorities in southern Germany have issued an alert concerning unknown persons who have been sticking small US flags into piles of dog droppings in public parks in Bayreuth.

"This has been going on for about a year now, and there must be 2,000 to 3,000 piles of excrement that have been thusly 'adorned' during that time," said Bayreuth parks administrator Josef Oettl.

The sporadic series of incidents originally was thought to be some sort of protest against the US-led invasion of Iraq. And when it continued it was thought to be a protest against President George W. Bush's campaign for re-election.
...
"We have sent out extra patrols to try to catch whoever is doing this in the act," said police spokesman Reiner Kuechler. "But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red- white- and-blue handed."

1. How decorative! Did they learn that on Martha Stuart's old show?
Or will she steal the idea for her new show?

2. Uh, What Would The "Perp" Be Charged With?
Desecration of a foreign flag? Yeah, that'll stick, 'cos Lord knows we respect other countries so well...

Better they should work on ticketing the buttholes who leave their dog's turds all over the park.

3. You've never been to Europe, I see...
impossible to walk very far in many European cities(Paris and Berlin are the worst) without having to step over (or in, if you aren't looking) dogshit on the sidewalk. As far as I know, there aren't any laws requiring dog owners to clean up after their pets...that seems to be pretty much an American thing.

4. oh, there are laws
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 08:10 AM by Kellanved
They are just not enforced. On the flip-side: there are no laws against using droppings as Flag-stand, it is probably even covered by Freedom of Expression.

Edit:
Fun Fact: The Berlin city cleaning service removes 60 metric tons of dog droppings from the sidewalks every year.

At the moment they are trying to solve it with a positive campaign: people cleaning up themselves get a discount on their waste disposal bill.

7. I've been 3 weeks in Madrid and seen nothing or the sort
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 08:30 AM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
Come to think of it, neither in Paris either, OK I was there two days only, but it was spring.

Maybe Berlin is worse, I don't know. Never been there.

11. Paris and Berlin are about equally bad

As I've said before: The only thing in Berlin one steps into more often than in history is Dog Poo.

12. dresden
i've been to quite a few german cities, and the one that sticks out the most on this topic is dresden.

hund-scheisse (dogshit) was everywhere when i was there - and it was raining, making the sidewalks a real mess. didn't see much in berlin, though, but it could have just been the area we were in.

13. Generally in eastern Germany
People are using the relatively new freedom of being allowed to keep dogs. And they are not willing to - excuse me- take shit from anybody about it.

I have the feeling that the attitude regarding cleaning up behind the dogs is slowly improving, though.
