Woman drinking Listerine arrested for drunk driving

ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) -- A woman who admitted drinking three glasses of Listerine mouthwash had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when she was arrested for drunken driving, police said Friday.

The woman, identified by police Sgt. Mike Shadbolt as 50-year-old Carol A. Ries of Adrian, was arrested Sunday night and released on personal bond the next day. She was to be arraigned late next week on a misdemeanor charge of operating under the influence of liquor, Shadbolt said.

Police also found an open bottle of Listerine in Ries' car, and asked Lenawee County prosecutors Friday to authorize a warrant charging her with having an open intoxicant in a motor vehicle, Shadbolt said. Calls to the prosecutor's office were not answered after business hours.

Ries showed signs of intoxication after her car rear-ended another vehicle Sunday, Shadbolt said. She told police she had not consumed any alcohol and also passed a Breathalyzer test, but "there was something not quite right about her," Shadbolt said.

2. Drinking Listerine? That's pretty hard core
Given that, they probably should have checked for open cans of Sterno, too.

5. Listerine or most any other mouthwash is the backup for alcoholics
since you can buy it at any 24 hour pharmacy, no questions asked.

One of the things you learn working at a pharmacy

The next morning, Pedialyte is the morning coffee of professional alkies, as it replenishes electrolytes faster than any other drink.

7. Talk about rotgut!
I'm surprised she has an intestinal tract left. Pour some listerine down the sink sometime and listen to it hiss-now imagine that's your throat.

8. I once worked with a hard-core alcoholic
who drank Listerine daily. I'm not sure why he couldn't get liquor, but he reeked of Listerine. He often passed out at various locations around the building. It was pathetic, and the bosses enabled him. They pretended everything was fine.

10. Listerine is a centerpiece of the strangest alcohol purchasing incident...
..of my life.

In August 1995, I was in New Orleans for the Young Democrats of America national convention, and my SO and I arrived a few days early to do the touristy-thing in Newalins and the surrounding bayous (bayeaux??)...

Anyhoo,

We found ourselves in a Metarie (suburb of New O.) Walgreens on a sweltering humid August day picking up some necessities. I pointed out to my darling SO that the Walgreens had a "liquor section". Now this was a big deal to us and practically a stand-alone sight to be seen, because we are from a state where liquor cannot be sold in grocery store or gourmet store, much less a Walgreens. (Liquor can only be sold in a tightly controlled state run liquor store in the home state. We don't even have package stores.)

So we meander over to see this thing of wonder that could not be seen at home - the "liquor section". The large portion of shelf space was dedicated to the usual liquor merchandise that you would find in any liquor store or package store, but, startlingly, right at the cusp of the liquor section and the main part of the Walgreens was a towering aqua and gold display--

A Listerine display! (both original and minty-fresh were featured.)

It was half-in and half-out of the liquor section, and you had to go around it to get into the liquor section. We both though this was really odd -- the other toothpaste and mouthwash items were on the other side of the store.

I remarked upon the Listerine display to the sales associate in the liquor section and she told me, "Oh, we sell mo' Listerine over heah than they do in oral care." (I'm assuming that oral care is the toothpaste section, even tho' this was the Big Easy.)

I had to know why, so I postulated, "Is it people trying to mask the liquor on their breath?"

The clerk gave me a knowing look and said, "No, honey, it's for the drunks who cain't afford good liquor. They jus' pick themselves up some Listerine. It's got a real high alcohol content and keeps your breath smellin' fresh."

The whole experience made me and my SO really sad.
