What movie did you hate, that everyone else you know liked?
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 07:56 PM by drumwolf
For me, it's Go. I expected to like it, because everyone I know likes it and I was interested in the subject matter (it's about twentysomethings dancing at raves and partying in Vegas, and its soundtrack consists of techno and electronica music, which I listen to). So I rented it, and I must say it's been a while since I've been this irritated by a movie.

(Mild spoilers in this paragraph.) I didn't care for most of the characters, and in particular I wanted to see Simon die. And some of the scenes were the kind of outright unrealistic, ludicrous idiocy I'd expect in some cheesy action flick/TV show. For example, in one scene a monster SUV plows into the side of an old, flimsy-looking car, and not only are the car's occupants not killed, but they keep driving.

And no, I'm not impressed by the film's use of alternate perspectives of the same scene, which I'm sure both Tarantino and Akira Kurosawa do much better and without annoying me the way this obnoxiously pretentious POS did.

3. The Matrix
Could care less about fancy karate fighting special fx and felt the story was trite and just elusive enough to avoid being incriminated for ultimately not making sense.

7. I totally agree.
The few things that were genuinely cool were outright stolen. Everything else was shallow people trying to be deep.

14. Seriously, we should be married - we hate the same things!
LOTR would be second on my list. I watched half of the first one before turning it off. My summary of the plot: Good guys get coveted ring and run, run, run from bad guys until bad guys catch up, then they fight, fight, fight, until they lose the ring, then they chase, chase, chase until they catch up and fight, fight, fight, and run, run, run, repeat ad infinitum.

I'd rather watch crap float.

26. Makes you wonder about imdb.com's Top 250 movies of all time
. . . that lists all three LOTRs in the top ten and two in the top five of all time. Yeah, geeks, whatever. The LOTR films are already better than Citizen Kane, The Godfather 2 and The Seven Samurai. OhhhhhhKAY, junior. Whatever you say. Fucking nerds. And I AM one.

10. Did you see it when you were 15?
Because that's part of it.

I love that movie because it sees love as something not based on all the exterior bullshit most movies make it into. Plus Maude speaks so, so much genuine wisdom.

When she takes the 50 cent trinket that Harold makes for her (which says "Harold loves Maude") she says it's the nicest gift she's ever gotten. Then she throws it into the bay. There's two different, astonishing kernals of wisdom in that- both of which are displayed in such a simple perfect way...

16. I HATED Harold and Maude, too...
I saw it when I was about 19, with a bunch of friends whom I loved but also found to be a tad bit "precious" at times. I was intensely pragmatic and they were all wearing tye-die and hugging trees. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I'm a die-hard environmentalist, but they'd sit around and be all dreamy and I wanted to go out and march and make noise and holler. So I was predisposed to dislike what any of them said was their favorite movie. I have a feeling now that if I could see it w/o the pre-viewing prejudice I harbored, I'd like Maude.

Other bummer though was that I got home to a voice message from my sister saying my grandmother had died...apparently about the same time as when I was watching the movie. So I hate it forevermore.

24. I didn't care for that one, either
I didn't hate it or anything, but didn't think it was one of greatest films I'd ever seen, like some of my friends did. I did like all the Cat Stevens music, though...

A few more I disagreed with my friends on: the Kids in the Hall movie- I think it was called Brain Candy. Also Pulp Fiction and The Matrix; however, there are also plenty of movie that I enjoyed that most of my friends didn't like. I'm not actually all that picky when it comes to movies.

What a frightdul load, "We didn't read poetry--we dripped it from out tongues; like honey."

Ueah, I'd never seen a movie about the oddballs stepping out. Except in a rare twist--none of them actually seized the day. They might have made a few fitful swipes at the day at best. What shite.

21. Sideways....it's getting all the raves now
and I think it BLOWS chunks. Ok I admit I don't have the world's best attention span, but I have not fidgeted so much in a movie before. I could have cared less about the characters or their pridicament of wanting to have one last fun weekend before one of them got married.

BORING!

25. Pfft, this list is a mile long, and I'm going to get hatred -
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 10:20 PM by HughBeaumont
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Sorry, but I just thought this was the biggest damned incoherent mess EVER, and don't tell me "I didn't get it". There's nothing TO get, it was bullshit. Put down that goddamned sheet and stop staring at a test pattern, damn it.

Waking Life GAAAAAH did this suck ass. It felt like watching Ethan Hawke, Jim Jarmusch, Jack White and that dickhead in your Political Science class who answers everything in flatulent self-important monologues sit around at a table, getting completely baked and unleashing the most pompous boooolshite ever captured on film.

Any Wes Anderson film. I hate smug. Sue me.

Any film with Will Ferrell besides Old School, and his scene-chewing disguised as acting almost fucked THAT up.

I'm with whoever said The Matrix, especially after watching it now. I thought it was mildly OK when I first saw it. With each subsequent watching, it got worse and worse.

Natural Born Killers A Frat-boy's idea of a deep picture and Ollie Stoned's acid trips come to life. Half the shit in it is impossible even when you suspend disbelief, and Juliette Lewis needs to be tied up. Turned two total fuck-ups into cult heroes among the Metallica set.

Pulp Fiction See Matrix above. When you first see it, it's good, but after repeated watchings, you're like "wow, that dialogue is just REALLY damned stupid and pretentious". Overusing "fuck" in movies is always a sore spot with me as well (Pretty much why I found The Big Lebowski to be overrated), as the writers just come off sounding like junior high kids talking in Slipknot lyrics to impress their peers.

Both Kill Bills I. Hate. Smug.

Good Will Hunting Can a movie bore you and piss you off at the same time? You just wanted to hit every single character with a bat - the script was over-masturbatory, mean-spirited, vulgar for the sake of being vulgar and WAY too much of a negative vibe for me to enjoy.

Sorry to shit on anyone's parade, but then again it's just me talking.
