Poll question: Should I risk driving my own POS car to D.C. tomorrow?
I have a feeling it will make it there and back, but it's a POS and i am paranoid it will break down on the way there or back. I know the oil needs to be changed but i don't have time to change it before i leave if i plan on leaving tomorrow.

So, what's your gut feeling? Any psychics out there? hehehehehehe

Should I drive my own car to DC tomorrow? It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive

2. I've only been to protests in SF
But I always drive to the 1st available BART station, and take the public transit. It can get chaotic, and parking is a bitch!

5. Drive to one of the outer subway stations and
take it in for a couple bucks. You will save time and not go insane trying to find a place ot park your car. The further out the station is the more likely you will find a parking spot.

9. I'm driving from AH-HIGH-AH (Cleveland) to Silver Spring MD on Wednesday
That's going to be about six hours and some change barring stupidity. I can't afford the flight there.

You can do 2 1/2 hours. Go for it. Remember to take trains everywhere. That's what I'm a-doing. Luckily, Silver Spring has a Metro station.

13. Make sure someone knows your route
Bring a cellphone if you can.

Got AAA? Got antifreeze? Got water? Got jumper cables?

What kind of car is it? I've been very bad about changing the oil in my hardy 11-yr-old Tercel (VERY bad), but when I decide to take a crazy spur-of-the-moment road trip, I top it off with some fresh oil; dunno if that's useful or not.

Maybe just pop into a service station on your way out and have them check your fluids and tires to make sure you're good to go?

Good luck, Faye. I have faith in you and your POS car. :)

16. thanks for the advice
yeah i should def. make sure my tires look ok and i put another quart of oil in my car. i do have a cell phone and it is working now, in case anything happens. i don't think i have AAA anymore tho, i used to but i think it expired. i'm not TOO worried about getting stuck somewhere, if worse came to worse i know i can find someone to come get me, but i have a feeling i'll make it there ok. still scary though :scared:

14. I'd probably say yes, BUT
in this weather, I don't know if I'd risk it... temperamental cars get temperamental in this kind of cold. Can you borrow a car or ??? I'd hate to see you break down, plus... if you're worried enough to ask this question, that probably tells ya something right there?!

... need to describe this POS in detail.

Make, model, year, and why you think it might not make it - i.e. maintenance problems you've had, etc.

I'm quite the computer and auto dude, so I'll give you great advice :)

17. 2 things right now
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 10:29 PM by Faye
i do know one thing, the oil in there is a little wierd - some random guy in a parking lot saw me looking in my hood, came over to see what i was doing, and said it looked like my oil somehow got mixed with water, cuz it looked like 'slugs'???? i since put more oil in and the past few days it has been running fine. the other thing wrong with it is that the timing belt is going, but i've heard i will never know when it's going to go out anyway, so not to worry too much driving it around  it's never broken down on me before and i've had for a year and half.

i'm also just a kind of paranoid person, i always think something bad is going to happen :(

oh, it's a '93 Oldsmobile Acheiva.

20. Normally...
... I don't encourage auto-paranoia.

In your case I'm going to make an exception. If you have ever seen "cheese" on your oil dipstick, that is seriously bad.

If your engine is exhibiting the tell-tale signs of a slack timing belt ( sluggish response, general feeling of delay), please do NOT drive this car for any distance until you get the belt replaced.

On some engines, if the timing belt fails at speed (with the engine RPMs high) it can pretty much wreck the engine (bend valves, put holes in pistons - basically the valves kiss the pistons which is a really bad thing) but I don't know offhand if your engine is one of those that do that.

But seriously, maybe you can find someone to get a ride with :)

Sorry to bear bad news :(

26. Many people here have said that it sounds like your car could
possibly have serious problems. Nevertheless, you still seem to want to go. So I say trust in God or faith or whatever you feel or believe in and assume that all will be well and go. I voted yes after reading your posts which told me how much you really want to go. Do us all one favor and sign up with AAA before you go -- its not hard. Good luck. The major problem with DC will be finding your way in traffic. Bring plenty of detailed maps. Be there for me -- I have to work but am wearing black to work for the coronation.
