I'm scanning and cleaning up all my old family photos...
I've done about 200 so far. It's downright addictive! These discolored old photos look great with just a little Photoshop!

2. Burn them to CD and send them to everyone in your family.
Make a few 29 cent digital prints and send those too. Yes, it's addictive. I also like to convert old 8mm family movies. Kids like to see a few good movies of their grandparents and great grandparents. (They always seem to be surprised there is no sound!)

Works well with the newer Macs. Don't know about PC stuff.
