Poll question: NHL on verge of cancelling season
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 08:29 PM by strategery blunder
"An NHL team owner who asked for anonymity said the league is expected to cancel the season either Thursday or Friday, possibly announcing it after the conclusion of Thursday's bargaining session, ESPN and Sportsnet.ca reported.

Nearly five months into the NHL lockout, the players’ association still won’t accept the league’s demand for a salary cap. The league says it’s too late to talk about alternatives."

1. Gary Bettman is a pig
actually, I now owe an apology to the entire porcine species.

Even the NBA does not have a hard salary cap such as the owners are proposing. What really galls is that this basically amounts to welfare for the struggling franchises in non-hockey-oriented red-state markets, like the one that made off with the Hartford Whalers :grr: and the one that may well be the last ever to win the Cup :grr: :grr:

2. Hey, I was the beneficiary of red-state transplantation...
I lived in the Phoenix area when the Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes, and I was quite happy to make off with someone else's hockey team:evilgrin: But yeah, I'll cede that the teams that went south need to go back up north where there is more fan interest.

Of course, winning the Stanley Cup will create interest no matter what market you're in...I still think it's blasphemous that a team from FLORIDA won the Cup.:grr::grr:

Maybe the South will be better able to support teams in twenty years when all the Northerners have migrated south in a conspiracy to turn the South blue again:evilgrin: I probably should stop dreaming now.:(

Personally, I don't agree with either side. I wish athletes (in all sports, not just hockey) didn't resist drug testing so much, but that's just me.

4. I don't care who is in the wrong..
I just want my hockey back. Can you imagine the outcry if they cancelled the NFL season? Well, I feel the same about hockey as most Americans feel about football. It's complete bullshit.
